DAKAR, Senegal, October 28, 2025 — Guinea-Conakry, long recognized for its dominance in global bauxite exports, is now positioning itself as a promising player in West Africa’s oil and gas landscape.
Under the leadership of its national oil company, the Société Nationale des Pétroles de Guinée (SONAP), the country is accelerating regulatory reforms, seismic exploration, and investor engagement — efforts that will be spotlighted at the upcoming MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power Conference 2025 in Dakar this December.
Geologically, Guinea-Conakry sits within the MSGBC basin — encompassing Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Guinea-Conakry — one of the world’s most exciting new frontiers for hydrocarbon exploration.
With Senegal and Mauritania already achieving significant production milestones, including oil from Woodside’s Sangomar field and gas from bp and Kosmos Energy’s Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project, Guinea-Conakry’s entry into this dynamic ecosystem marks a new era for regional energy development.
Geological Potential for Hydrocarbon Reserves
Guinea-Conakry’s geological setting closely mirrors that of Guyana and Suriname, two Atlantic Equatorial margin countries that transformed into major oil producers after similar exploration breakthroughs.
The nation’s Cretaceous formations, marine source rocks, and sedimentary basins exhibit high potential for substantial oil and gas reserves.
SONAP has compiled extensive 2D and 3D seismic data spanning over 17,000 km², supported by historical borehole records that provide a strong foundation for targeted exploration.
The government’s growing data repository allows investors to evaluate opportunities with reduced geological risk — a crucial step toward attracting global capital and technical expertise.
SONAP’s Expanding Role in Guinea’s Energy Future
Since its establishment in 2021, SONAP has evolved into a strategic institution driving Guinea-Conakry’s oil and gas ambitions.
Under the leadership of Director General Dr. Lanciné Condé, SONAP has modernized its technical capacity through the acquisition of advanced field tools for topography, mapping, and gas detection.
A milestone achievement includes the creation of Guinea’s first national seismic data visualization center, developed in collaboration with SLB and TGS.
The center houses 15,000 km² of 3D seismic and 45,000 km² of 2D seismic data — a critical step in enabling informed exploration and transparent access for investors.
Early findings from exploratory wells such as GU-2B-1 and Sabu-1 confirm the existence of a working petroleum system in the Upper Cretaceous formations.
Although deepwater well Fatala-1 did not yield commercial output, geological analogues with other successful Atlantic basins suggest continued optimism.
Regulatory Reforms and Investment Incentives
SONAP is spearheading structural reforms to enhance Guinea-Conakry’s appeal as an energy investment destination.
A national petroleum cadastre has been launched, with 22 oil and gas blocks identified for bidding.
In April 2025, SONAP introduced two major tenders — one for a storage and product management platform, and another aimed at achieving ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certifications, ensuring adherence to global standards of quality and safety.
These initiatives underscore SONAP’s commitment to governance, transparency, and operational excellence.
The combination of reduced exploration risk, improved data access, and investor-friendly policies provides an attractive landscape for early entrants seeking long-term partnerships.
Showcasing Guinea’s Energy Future at the MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power Conference 2025
Guinea-Conakry’s transformation into an oil and gas hub will take center stage at the MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power Conference 2025, scheduled for December 9–10 in Dakar, Senegal.
The conference will serve as a vital platform for SONAP and the Ministry of Hydrocarbons to present the country’s exploration prospects, regulatory reforms, and partnership opportunities to a global audience.
“Guinea-Conakry’s growing engagement in the MSGBC basin marks the beginning of a new energy chapter for West Africa.
By showcasing its petroleum potential at the MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power Conference, SONAP is opening doors to transformative partnerships that will unlock value for decades to come,” said Sandra Jeque, Project Director at Energy Capital & Power.
