Governor Alex Otti expresses confidence in Nnamdi Kanu release, citing President Tinubu’s support for a political solution to the IPOB leader’s detention.
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has once again rekindled hope in the South-East by declaring that the long-awaited Nnamdi Kanu release is close.
Otti, who spoke during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s official one-day visit to Abia State, expressed confidence that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) would regain his freedom through a political solution.
The President was represented at the event by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to resolving the issue peacefully.
Governor Otti disclosed that he had personally engaged President Tinubu over Kanu’s continued detention and was assured of the President’s favourable position on the matter.

“I can assure you that I am engaging with Mr President. He is favourably disposed to it, and I am sure that in no distant future, Nnamdi Kanu release will happen,” Otti declared, drawing applause from supporters.
The governor explained that his optimism stemmed from his long-standing personal relationship with President Tinubu.
According to him, Tinubu is a man of integrity who honours his word.
“Mr President and I have been friends for decades. Whatever he wants to do, he will tell you, and if he will not, he will say so. Having made promises, I am sure he will keep them,” Otti added.
Speaking on behalf of the President, Minister Umahi urged residents of the South-East to remain peaceful and united as leaders work towards addressing the sensitive issue.
“I ask the people of the South-East to unite and come together. As your brother, I have listened to the messages for Mr President and the comments of the governor of Abia State,” Umahi said.
He emphasized that leaders from the South-East—governors, senators, and federal representatives—were already exploring a political resolution that would bring lasting peace.
Minister Umahi confirmed that regional leaders were working closely with the Federal Government to achieve a peaceful settlement that would end the prolonged detention.
“I want to assure Senator Abaribe and Governor Otti that the governors of the South-East are working very seriously.
“They are exploring a political solution together with our senators, House of Representatives members, and ministers,” he explained.
He added that President Tinubu’s administration is focused on dialogue rather than confrontation, stressing that this approach would pave the way for peace in the region.
The question of Nnamdi Kanu release goes beyond the freedom of one man. For many in the South-East, it represents justice, reconciliation, and inclusion within the Nigerian state. Kanu’s detention has fueled years of tension, protests, and insecurity in the region.
Supporters argue that granting him freedom would calm unrest, heal political wounds, and reduce agitation. Critics, however, warn that releasing him without proper conditions could spark new controversies.
Nevertheless, Otti’s statement has provided reassurance that progress is being made, and that the Federal Government is actively considering a solution that balances justice with national unity.
Umahi reminded citizens that President Tinubu has shown goodwill to the South-East through projects, appointments, and deliberate inclusion in national development. He urged the region to remain law-abiding while awaiting progress on Kanu’s case.
“I am confident that with the love of the president for the South-East, a peaceful resolution will come to pass.
“But we must remain law-abiding, appreciative, and recognise that this president has placed the South-East at the centre of national activities,” Umahi said.
This message highlighted the government’s recognition that the stability of the South-East is crucial to Nigeria’s overall growth and security.
Reactions to the governor’s remarks have been mixed but hopeful. Many residents welcomed the assurance as a positive sign that the Federal Government is serious about a political resolution.
Civil society groups and elders in the region have echoed calls for patience, urging the people to give dialogue a chance.
Others remain skeptical, pointing out that similar promises have been made in the past without result. Still, the governor’s confidence, backed by his personal ties with President Tinubu, has made his words carry greater weight.
If achieved, the Nnamdi Kanu release could mark a historic turning point in Nigeria’s political journey.
It would not only ease tensions in the South-East but also demonstrate the government’s commitment to inclusivity and peaceful conflict resolution.
The collaboration between regional governors, federal lawmakers, and the Presidency is a strong indication that the matter is being treated with urgency.
The expectation now rests on political will and the readiness to take bold but necessary steps.
Governor Alex Otti’s assurance has reignited hopes for the long-awaited Nnamdi Kanu release.
With President Tinubu’s administration showing openness to dialogue and South-East leaders pushing for a political solution, the possibility of Kanu’s freedom looks closer than ever.
For millions of Nigerians, especially in the South-East, his release represents more than a legal or political decision—it is a step toward peace, reconciliation, and renewed trust between the government and the people.
