Ogun State records fewer road crashes, deaths and injuries in 2026 as FRSC credits sustained road safety campaigns and urges motorists to obey traffic laws.

The Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a significant decline in road traffic crashes, fatalities and injuries recorded across the state during the first five months of 2026, describing the development as evidence that sustained road safety campaigns are beginning to produce positive results.

The command said the encouraging figures were achieved through a combination of intensive public awareness programmes, stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and continuous engagement with motorists and other road users on the importance of responsible driving.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the Ogun State FRSC Command, Mr. Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed that 415 road traffic crashes were recorded between January and May 2026.

The accidents claimed the lives of 161 people, while another 1,007 victims suffered injuries ranging from minor to severe.

According to him, the latest statistics represent a notable improvement compared with the same period in 2025, when the state recorded 494 road crashes.

During that period, 212 people lost their lives, while 1,121 others sustained injuries in different accidents across Ogun State.

The comparison shows that fewer people were involved in road crashes this year, while the number of deaths and injuries also dropped considerably.

The FRSC believes the downward trend demonstrates that consistent road safety education and increased compliance with traffic regulations can make a measurable difference in reducing avoidable tragedies on Nigerian roads.

Odunsi attributed the improvement largely to the command’s sustained public enlightenment initiatives, noting that officers have continued to educate drivers, commercial transport operators, passengers and other road users on the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of observing traffic laws.

He explained that awareness campaigns were carried out across different communities and motor parks in Ogun State, with officers emphasizing safe driving practices, proper vehicle maintenance and compliance with established road safety rules.

According to the spokesperson, the command remains convinced that educating motorists before accidents occur is just as important as enforcing traffic regulations after violations are detected.

He said the achievement would not have been possible without the commitment of FRSC personnel, who have continued to dedicate time and resources to sensitising members of the public on ways to reduce road crashes.

Despite the encouraging decline in accident figures, Odunsi warned that several motorists still engage in dangerous driving habits that continue to threaten public safety.

He identified excessive speeding as one of the biggest contributors to road traffic crashes in the state.

He also listed driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless overtaking, using mobile phones while driving, overloading vehicles beyond approved capacity and tyre bursts caused by poor maintenance as other major factors responsible for many accidents.

According to him, most of these causes are preventable if motorists choose to obey traffic regulations and maintain greater discipline behind the wheel.

The FRSC spokesperson stressed that many crashes occur because drivers ignore warning signs, violate speed limits or fail to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on journeys.

He appealed to motorists to make safety their highest priority whenever they are on the road, urging them to avoid risky behaviour that could endanger passengers, pedestrians and fellow road users.

Odunsi also encouraged commercial transport operators to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and to discourage practices capable of increasing the likelihood of crashes.

He further advised passengers not to remain silent whenever drivers engage in dangerous conduct such as speeding, making phone calls while driving or overtaking carelessly, noting that everyone has a role to play in promoting safer highways.

“We appeal to motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations in order to prevent unnecessary loss of lives through road crashes,” he said.

The command reiterated that enforcement operations would continue alongside regular public sensitisation campaigns aimed at reducing accidents throughout Ogun State.

Odunsi reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to strengthening road safety through continuous education, strict compliance monitoring and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to improve road user behaviour.

He expressed optimism that with greater cooperation from motorists and members of the public, Ogun State could record even lower accident figures before the end of the year.

Road safety experts have consistently maintained that responsible driving, regular vehicle maintenance and strict observance of traffic laws remain the most effective ways to reduce crashes and save lives.

The latest figures released by the Ogun State FRSC suggest that sustained awareness campaigns and improved compliance are beginning to deliver measurable results, even as authorities continue to urge motorists not to become complacent.
