The atmosphere in Nigeria’s capital is charged with anticipation as preparations for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Election enter their final phase.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled an extensive operational framework designed to ensure that Saturday’s Area Council polls proceed without disruption.
From technology upgrades to reinforced logistics and heightened security presence, the Commission says it has left little to chance.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, outlined the scale of the exercise.
According to him, 1,680,315 registered voters are expected to participate in the FCT Election, casting ballots across 2,822 polling units situated within the six Area Councils.
A total of 570 candidates are contesting chairmanship and councillorship seats, underscoring the competitive nature of the race.
The chairman described the poll as more than just a local government contest. In his view, the FCT Election represents a benchmark for grassroots democracy and administrative competence.
He emphasized that as the nation’s capital, Abuja carries symbolic weight, making it imperative that the process reflects transparency, efficiency, and public trust.
One of the central pillars of the Commission’s readiness is technology. INEC has confirmed the complete deployment of upgraded Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices, widely known as BVAS.
These machines will be used for voter authentication to prevent impersonation and reduce irregularities.
Officials say improvements have been made to enhance speed, reliability, and data handling capacity during accreditation.
Beyond digital safeguards, INEC has strengthened its logistics network to address past concerns about delayed openings of polling units.
More than 1,100 vehicles have been allocated to transport personnel and materials across the territory. Additionally, 620 motorcycles will provide access to interior communities, while 14 boats have been arranged for riverine settlements.
This layered mobility plan aims to ensure that election materials arrive promptly, even in hard-to-reach locations.
The Commission also disclosed that contingency measures are firmly in place. Backup technical teams will be stationed strategically across the six Area Councils to resolve any malfunction involving BVAS devices.
Alternative transportation routes have been mapped out to counter unexpected road blockages or adverse weather conditions.
According to INEC, such proactive steps are crucial to the overall credibility of the FCT Election.
Transparency has been highlighted as another priority area. INEC has accredited 89 domestic and international observer groups to monitor proceedings.
In addition, 700 journalists have received clearance to report from polling centres and collation venues.
The chairman explained that broad observation encourages accountability and strengthens confidence in the outcome of the FCT Election.
Security coordination has also taken centre stage. Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission will be deployed across polling units.
Their role is to deter vote buying, monitor suspicious financial activities, and enforce compliance with electoral regulations.
INEC believes that visible enforcement will discourage malpractice and protect the integrity of the ballot.
In addition to anti-corruption agencies, conventional security services have been briefed to maintain neutrality while ensuring public safety.
Authorities stress that officers are expected to provide protection without interfering in the voting process.
Political actors have been cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric or actions capable of inciting unrest.
Training of election personnel has been completed ahead of schedule. Ad-hoc staff, supervisory presiding officers, and returning officers underwent intensive sessions focused on voter verification procedures, crisis management, and proper documentation.
Special emphasis was placed on accurate result recording and transmission protocols to guarantee transparency at every level.
INEC has reiterated that it remains impartial in the contest. The chairman affirmed that the Commission does not favour any political party or candidate and is committed to reflecting the genuine will of voters.
He encouraged citizens to come out early, comply with guidelines, and conduct themselves peacefully throughout the exercise.
Observers note that the outcome of the FCT Election may shape political dynamics within the capital’s six Area Councils, influencing grassroots development priorities and local governance.
Issues such as infrastructure, sanitation, healthcare, and market regulation are expected to dominate campaign promises and post-election discourse.
As the countdown to Saturday continues, stakeholders appear cautiously optimistic.
With technological enhancements, improved logistics, accredited observers, and coordinated security arrangements, expectations are high that the process will meet acceptable democratic standards.
Ultimately, the success of the FCT Election will depend not only on institutional preparedness but also on the collective responsibility of voters, candidates, and security agencies to uphold peace and order.
