Police arrest a suspect after a violent cutlass assault in Tede, Oyo State, where a farmer lost his wrist during a dispute linked to a local disagreement.
The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a man suspected of committing a violent cutlass assault that left a farmer severely injured in Tede, a community in Atisbo Local Government Area of the state.

The shocking incident has triggered widespread concern among residents and renewed calls for peaceful conflict resolution at the grassroots level.
The arrest was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, in an official statement released on Saturday, December 3, 2026.
According to him, the Command acted swiftly after receiving information about the attack, demonstrating its readiness to respond decisively to violent crime across Oyo State.
Preliminary police findings revealed that the incident involved two men identified as Benua Bukari and Sunday James.
Bukari, a farmer and resident of Ologede Village in Tede, was reportedly involved in a heated disagreement with James, which later escalated into a physical confrontation.
What began as a personal dispute quickly degenerated into a dangerous act of violence.
Police investigations indicated that the disagreement was allegedly linked to issues involving three young women residing in Ibudọ Kareem Village, also within the Tede axis.
While details surrounding the disagreement remain under investigation, officers confirmed that the misunderstanding spiralled out of control, culminating in a brutal cutlass assault.
During the confrontation, Sunday James was said to have armed himself with a cutlass and attacked Bukari. In the process, Bukari’s right wrist was severed, leaving him with life-altering injuries.
The severity of the attack sent shockwaves through the local community, where residents described the incident as both tragic and avoidable.
Upon receiving the distress report, a team of police operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer of the Tede Division immediately mobilised to the scene.
Their prompt intervention resulted in the arrest of the suspect, who was taken into custody without resistance.
The police confirmed that James is currently being detained while a full-scale investigation continues.
The injured farmer was swiftly assisted by the responding officers, who ensured he was rushed to a medical facility for urgent treatment.
According to the police, Bukari is presently receiving medical care and is being closely monitored by health professionals.
Authorities did not disclose further details about his condition but assured the public that efforts were made to stabilise him quickly.
DSP Ayanlade reiterated that the Oyo State Police Command views violent incidents such as this cutlass assault with utmost seriousness.
He stressed that the Command would not tolerate any form of brutality or self-help that threatens public peace and safety.
The police spokesperson also used the incident to issue a strong warning to residents across the state.
He cautioned against resorting to violence as a means of settling disputes, noting that disagreements should always be addressed through lawful and peaceful channels.
“Members of the public are strongly advised to avoid taking the law into their own hands,” the statement read.
“Conflicts should be resolved through dialogue, mediation, or by seeking assistance from appropriate authorities, rather than engaging in acts that could result in irreversible consequences.”
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Femi Haruna, expressed deep concern over the violent attack.
He described the incident as unfortunate and unacceptable, particularly within a community setting where peaceful coexistence is essential.
The Commissioner directed that the suspect be charged to court immediately investigations are concluded, assuring residents that justice would be pursued without delay.
He further emphasized that incidents of violent crime, including cutlass assault, would continue to receive firm and professional responses from the police.
CP Haruna reassured the people of Oyo State that the Command remains fully committed to ridding the state of violent crime.
He stated that the police would continue to adopt intelligence-driven strategies to prevent similar incidents and ensure a safer environment for residents.
According to him, the Command’s actions align with the broader vision and mission of the Inspector-General of Police, whose leadership has strengthened proactive policing and improved security operations nationwide.
He encouraged community members to cooperate with law enforcement by providing timely information that could help prevent crime.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of unresolved disputes and the devastating impact of violence on families and communities.
As investigations continue, residents of Tede and surrounding areas are hopeful that justice will be served and that stronger awareness efforts will help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
