FAAN investigates a viral video showing a confrontation between an AVSEC officer and a female passenger during a security screening at Osubi Airport.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has launched an investigation into a confrontation between an Aviation Security (AVSEC) officer and a female passenger at Osubi Airport, also known as Alfred Diete-Spiff Airport, in Delta State.
The incident came into the public spotlight after a video showing the disagreement surfaced online and began circulating widely across social media platforms.
The footage has since generated reactions from members of the public, with attention focused on the manner in which the passenger was screened and how the disagreement was handled by airport personnel.
According to reports surrounding the incident, the confrontation started during the passenger’s security screening at the airport.
The AVSEC personnel reportedly raised concerns about canned milk and other tinned food products found among the items packed in the woman’s luggage.
The passenger reportedly became upset after some of the food items were taken from her luggage by the security officials. She was said to have expressed concern that the contents of the cans could potentially spill inside her bag while she was travelling.
The disagreement, however, reportedly went beyond the issue of the food items as the passenger also questioned the procedure adopted by the airport security personnel while inspecting her luggage.
In the video that has attracted significant attention online, the woman reportedly challenged the decision to manually search through her belongings in the presence of other passengers.
She questioned why the luggage could not have been examined using the airport’s available scanning equipment instead of being opened and searched manually.
The exchange between the passenger and the security personnel subsequently became heated, leading to a verbal confrontation inside the airport terminal.
The incident was later captured on video, with the footage eventually making its way onto social media.
The emergence of the video prompted calls from members of the public for the authorities to investigate what happened and determine whether the actions of the airport officials were consistent with established security procedures.

FAAN has now responded to the development, confirming that it is looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The authority’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, disclosed the development in a statement issued in response to the viral footage.
Agbebire said FAAN had begun a fact-finding process to establish the full details of what transpired between the passenger and the AVSEC officer.
The investigation is expected to provide clarity on the events leading up to the confrontation and the conduct of the personnel involved.
The decision to investigate the matter was reportedly directed by FAAN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku.
The airport authority said the probe would focus on the actions of the security officer and determine whether the conduct of the personnel was in line with FAAN’s established operational procedures.
The investigation will also examine whether the officer’s actions met the agency’s expected service standards and complied with its code of conduct.
FAAN’s decision to investigate the incident highlights the importance of maintaining professionalism during interactions between airport officials and passengers, particularly during security checks, which are an essential part of air travel.
While airport security personnel are responsible for ensuring that passengers and their belongings comply with aviation safety regulations, passengers are also expected to cooperate with established screening procedures.
However, disagreements can arise when travellers question the handling of their belongings or the manner in which security checks are conducted.
The authority’s investigation is expected to establish whether the screening process in this particular case was properly carried out and whether the subsequent confrontation could have been avoided.
FAAN also made it clear that the investigation would be guided by established rules and procedures rather than conclusions drawn from the video circulating online.
The agency stated that appropriate action would be taken if the investigation finds that the officer involved breached any of the authority’s regulations or operational guidelines.
According to FAAN, any personnel found guilty of violating established rules could face administrative or disciplinary measures. Such action would be taken in accordance with applicable civil service regulations and the authority’s internal procedures.
The development has also renewed discussions about the need for effective communication and professionalism in Nigerian airports.
With thousands of passengers passing through airports daily, security checks remain a critical part of the aviation system, making proper conduct by both officials and travellers essential.
For now, FAAN has not disclosed the outcome of its investigation or announced any disciplinary action against the officer involved. The authority is expected to make further decisions after completing its review of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The viral video has continued to attract public attention, but FAAN’s investigation is expected to provide a clearer account of what happened at Osubi Airport and determine whether any airport procedures or staff conduct were breached during the encounter.
