Twenty-three-year-old DELSU student Prince Daniel Chukwujindu has been installed as the 11th Ajeh of Ekwuoma Kingdom in Delta State.

Ekwuoma Kingdom in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State has welcomed a new traditional ruler following the installation of 23-year-old Prince Daniel Afamefune Chukwujindu as the 11th Ajeh of the kingdom.

The new monarch, who is currently studying Microbiology at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, ascended the throne following the death of his father, King Chinedu Samuel Chukwujindu, who was the 10th Ajeh of Ekwuoma and held the title Ezeagu-Ukpo I.

The late monarch died on June 2, 2026, bringing an end to an 18-year reign during which he was described by community leaders as a ruler committed to peace, service and the welfare of his people.

Prince Daniel has now taken over the traditional institution as Ezeagu-Ukpo II, marking a generational transition in the leadership of the nearly 400-year-old kingdom.

Ekwuoma Kingdom

His emergence was not the result of a contested selection process, but followed the traditional succession arrangement recognised by Ekwuoma.

The kingdom operates a system of primogeniture, under which the first son of a reigning monarch is regarded as the rightful successor to the throne.

Community authorities said the practice has been preserved for generations and has remained the established method of succession since the kingdom was founded almost four centuries ago.

The installation of the new Ajeh formed part of activities held during the completion of the burial rites of his late father.

The occasion therefore carried both a solemn and celebratory significance, as members of the kingdom simultaneously paid their final respects to the deceased monarch and witnessed the beginning of a new reign.

The ceremony drew dignitaries and residents from within and outside Ekwuoma. Traditional rulers, chiefs, community leaders, government representatives, academics, relatives, friends and other well-wishers were among those who attended the event.

Various traditional rites were performed to signify the transfer of authority from the late monarch to his successor.

Prayers were also offered for the new Ajeh, with speakers and members of the community seeking divine wisdom, protection and guidance for his reign.

The transition has attracted particular attention because of the age of the new monarch.

At just 23, Prince Daniel is assuming responsibility for a traditional institution with a history stretching back several centuries while simultaneously pursuing his university education.

His position places him at the intersection of traditional leadership and modern academic life, presenting him with the task of preserving the cultural identity of Ekwuoma while responding to the changing expectations of younger generations.

In his first remarks as Ajeh, Prince Daniel expressed gratitude to the people of Ekwuoma for accepting and supporting him.

He pledged to respect and protect the customs and traditions of the kingdom, while making peace, unity and community development key priorities of his reign.

The young monarch appealed to the people of Ekwuoma to remain united and support the traditional institution irrespective of personal differences.

He maintained that the progress of the kingdom would require collective efforts, urging sons and daughters of Ekwuoma to work together to build a more peaceful, prosperous and united community.

According to him, cooperation between the traditional institution, government and the people would be essential in confronting the challenges facing the kingdom.

He also indicated that development could only be sustained when the community works collectively and maintains a shared sense of responsibility for its future.

The Chairman of the Council of Chiefs and Orikeze of Ekwuoma, Chief Ernest Njokede, also welcomed the new monarch and congratulated him on his emergence as the 11th Ajeh.

Njokede expressed optimism that the new reign would bring peace, stability and meaningful progress to the kingdom.

He called for divine guidance and wisdom for Prince Daniel, praying that the young monarch would be blessed with the strength, good health and sound judgment required to discharge the responsibilities attached to the throne.

While congratulating the new Ajeh, Njokede also paid tribute to his late father, describing the former monarch’s 18-year tenure as a period in which he dedicated himself to the service and wellbeing of Ekwuoma.

He said the late Ajeh’s contributions had created a legacy that would remain part of the history of the kingdom, urging the new administration to build on the positive aspects of his predecessor’s reign.

Njokede further used the occasion to appeal to community members to put aside personal interests and disagreements in the interest of Ekwuoma.

He stressed that the kingdom’s heritage belonged to everyone and should therefore be protected collectively.

“Ekwuoma belongs to all of us. It is our collective heritage. Let us treasure and guard it with jealousy because we are the envy of the numerous less fortunate communities around us,” he said.

The community leader also rejected the idea that development should be left exclusively in the hands of the traditional ruler and chiefs.

“Community development is not the sole responsibility of the traditional institution or the chiefs alone; it is a shared responsibility that calls for the commitment of all sons and daughters of Ekwuoma and other residents of the kingdom,” Njokede added.

The enthronement of Ezeagu-Ukpo II has consequently opened a new chapter in the history of Ekwuoma Kingdom.

As the young Ajeh settles into his new role, expectations are likely to centre on his ability to preserve the kingdom’s long-standing traditions while providing leadership that reflects the aspirations of both older residents and younger members of the community.

For Ekwuoma, the transition represents more than the replacement of one monarch with another.

It is also a generational handover that places the responsibility of protecting centuries-old heritage in the hands of a young leader who is still preparing for his professional future.

The community will now look to Prince Daniel to build on the legacy of his late father, strengthen unity among the people and contribute to the continued peace and development of Ekwuoma Kingdom.
