Gunmen, suspected to be members of a rival cult group, carried out a violent attack in the Ogidi community of Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State, killing the town’s President-General and another man.

The incident, which occurred on the evening of Friday, February 6, has left residents in shock and fear, while local authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the killings.
The President-General of Ogidi, Sir Ikwuka Okoye, popularly known as Anumili, was the primary target of the assailants.
Eyewitnesses reported that gunmen stormed the community, firing indiscriminately at the School Field, where the victims were attacked.
During the assault, another man, believed to be a close relative of the President-General, was also gunned down. The identity of the second victim is yet to be officially confirmed.
A source within the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the attack as “daredevil” and unprovoked.
“The gunmen invaded our town late on Friday evening,” the source said.
“By the time they were done, Sir Ikwuka Okoye and his relative lay lifeless on the ground. The entire community was thrown into chaos as residents ran for cover.”
Reports indicate that the attack is likely a retaliation by a rival cult group.
Investigations so far suggest that the assailants were seeking revenge following the recent arrest and killing of their leader by local security operatives.
The slain cult leader, described as notorious in the community, had reportedly been involved in several violent activities before being captured.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the killings in a statement issued on Saturday.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson, expressed regret over the incident and assured the public that all efforts were being made to apprehend the perpetrators.
“The Anambra State Police Command regrets the murder of the President-General of Ogidi community and one other person.
“The attack, which occurred at the School Field, Ogidi, is allegedly linked to the recent capture and killing of a known notorious cultist within the community,” he said.
According to SP Ikenga, police officers swiftly secured the scene immediately after receiving reports of the attack.
Investigators are currently relying on eyewitness accounts and other intelligence to identify and arrest the gunmen responsible.
He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate fully with the police during the ongoing investigation, stressing that maintaining peace in the Ogidi community is a top priority.
The killings have sparked widespread concern among residents of Ogidi and neighboring towns.
Many community members have expressed fear over the possibility of further attacks, calling on security agencies to increase patrols and presence in the area.
Traditional and youth leaders in Ogidi have also condemned the killings, describing the violence as “unacceptable and destabilizing.”
Some residents noted that the attack marks one of the deadliest incidents in recent times in Ogidi.
The community, known for its relative calm and cohesive social structure, has been shaken by the sudden outbreak of violence.
Locals have appealed to state authorities to ensure that justice is served promptly, emphasizing the need for stronger measures against cult-related violence in the area.
Analysts suggest that attacks like the one in Ogidi are part of a wider trend of escalating cult-related violence in Anambra State, particularly in towns where rivalry between groups has intensified.
Security experts warn that without proper intervention, such clashes could threaten the stability of entire communities and undermine development efforts.
The Ogidi community killings underscore the persistent challenge posed by cultists in parts of southeastern Nigeria.
Law enforcement agencies have been urged to strengthen intelligence-gathering, surveillance, and rapid response mechanisms to prevent retaliatory attacks and restore public confidence.
Meanwhile, residents continue to mourn the loss of the President-General, a respected leader whose influence extended across Ogidi and beyond.
SP Ikenga reassured the public that the police are leaving no stone unturned in their investigation.
“We are working closely with community leaders, eyewitnesses, and other security agencies to bring those responsible to justice,” he said.
“Residents of Ogidi are urged to report any suspicious movements or information that could aid the investigation. We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of every citizen in Anambra State.”
The tragic incident in Ogidi has once again highlighted the urgent need for community policing, civic engagement, and targeted interventions against cultism in Anambra State.
Authorities have promised continuous updates as investigations progress, while residents brace for further security measures and heightened vigilance in the coming days.
