Boko Haram terrorist surrenders to Operation HADIN KAI troops in Borno State with an RPG launcher, bomb and phone as military pressure on insurgents intensifies.
A suspected Boko Haram terrorist has voluntarily surrendered to troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
The development occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at approximately 9:20 a.m., as military forces continued their sustained campaign against terrorist groups operating across the North-East.
The individual, whose name and identity have not been disclosed by the military, reportedly turned himself in to troops at Pulka and surrendered items believed to have been part of his operational equipment.
Among the weapons and other items handed over were a Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) launcher, an RPG bomb and a mobile phone.
The surrender is being regarded by the military as another indication of the pressure being brought to bear on terrorist elements through ongoing operations within the theatre.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, confirmed the incident.
Goni said preliminary information obtained following the surrender suggested that the individual had previously operated in the Mandara Mountains axis.
The area, located around the Nigeria-Cameroon border, has historically been associated with terrorist activities and has remained an important area of security concern for troops operating in the region.
Although the military has not disclosed the circumstances that led to the man’s decision to surrender, his voluntary submission comes against the backdrop of continuing military operations intended to restrict the movement and activities of terrorist fighters.
The troops are expected to conduct further investigations to establish the full identity and background of the surrendered individual, as well as determine his level of involvement in terrorist activities.
Military authorities said the man is currently undergoing preliminary investigation and profiling in line with established procedures.
“The surrendered terrorist is undergoing preliminary investigation and profiling in accordance with established procedures,” Goni said.
The profiling process is expected to assist the military in obtaining relevant information about the individual and his previous activities, while also allowing security authorities to establish whether he has information that could assist ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
The recovery of the RPG launcher and bomb is also significant from a security perspective, as such weapons can pose a serious threat to military personnel and other targets when used by armed groups.
The military said the latest development reflects the effect of sustained pressure being maintained against terrorist networks across the North-East.
For years, security forces have conducted operations aimed at weakening the capabilities of terrorist groups, disrupting their movements and limiting their ability to launch attacks or maintain operational positions.
According to the Theatre Command, continued military pressure is gradually reducing the freedom of action available to terrorist elements operating within its area of responsibility.
The surrender also aligns with the broader objective of Operation HADIN KAI to encourage members of terrorist groups who are willing to abandon violence to lay down their arms and return to peaceful living.
Rather than only targeting terrorist capabilities through military engagements, the command has also continued to emphasise opportunities for fighters to abandon their involvement in terrorism.
The military believes that voluntary surrender can contribute to weakening terrorist organisations by reducing their manpower and taking weapons out of circulation.
The latest incident in Pulka therefore represents more than the recovery of an RPG launcher and other items.
It also provides the military with an opportunity to further examine the activities and networks connected to the individual, particularly given his reported previous operations around the Mandara Mountains.
Pulka and the wider Gwoza area have remained strategically important in counter-insurgency operations in Borno State because of their proximity to areas along the Nigeria-Cameroon border where terrorist groups have historically operated.

The military has continued to deploy troops and conduct operations in different parts of the North-East in an effort to prevent terrorist elements from establishing freedom of movement or regaining lost operational ground.
While the identity of the latest defector remains undisclosed, authorities are expected to release additional information if the ongoing investigation establishes facts that can be made public.
Captain Goni said the Theatre Command would not relent in its efforts to maintain pressure on terrorist groups operating across the region.
He stressed that the command remained committed to denying terrorist elements the freedom to operate and strengthening the conditions required for peace and stability.
The military’s position is that sustained pressure is necessary to prevent terrorist groups from regrouping, reorganising their networks or rebuilding their operational capabilities.
The command also reiterated its determination to degrade the capabilities of terrorist elements while creating opportunities for those willing to abandon violence to embrace peace.
The surrender in Pulka comes as part of the continuing security campaign in the North-East, where the military has been engaged in efforts to counter terrorism and insurgency.
For the troops, each voluntary surrender potentially provides another opportunity to weaken terrorist networks and obtain useful intelligence about their operations.
The military has therefore continued to combine offensive operations with measures aimed at encouraging members of terrorist groups to give up their activities.
The surrendered individual will remain subject to the military’s established investigation and profiling process. The outcome of that process will determine the next steps to be taken by the authorities.
For now, the surrender of the unidentified Boko Haram terrorist, together with the RPG launcher, RPG bomb and mobile phone, has been presented by Operation HADIN KAI as evidence of the continued pressure being exerted on terrorist elements in the North-East.
The Theatre Command has assured residents that troops will sustain their operations against terrorist groups while working towards creating a more secure environment across Borno State and the wider North-East region.
