The Oyo State chapter of the African Action Congress (AAC) has issued a strong warning to the State Police Command over what it described as increasing cases of illegal arrests, extortion, and abuse of power across the state.
The party expressed concern that residents are being subjected to harassment and intimidation, contrary to constitutional provisions guaranteeing citizens’ rights.
In a statement signed by its State Chairman, Kayode Babayomi, the party said recent developments suggest a troubling pattern of misconduct by some officers.
According to the party, reports from various communities indicate that individuals are being unlawfully detained, forced to pay money before release, and in some cases subjected to degrading treatment.
The party linked the situation to what it described as a resurgence of practices that sparked nationwide outrage during the #EndSARS protests.
It noted that despite promises of reform within the Nigeria Police Force, residents of Oyo State are allegedly still facing violations of their fundamental human rights.
Babayomi stressed that policing must be guided strictly by the rule of law. He emphasized that officers are constitutionally empowered to protect lives and property—not to intimidate or exploit citizens.
According to him, charging bail fees, which are legally prohibited, remains one of the most common complaints from affected residents.
“The rule of law must prevail at all times,” the statement read.
“Citizens should be able to go about their lawful activities without fear of harassment. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria clearly outlines the rights of individuals, and those rights must not be trampled upon.”
AAC maintained that while Oyo residents are generally peaceful and law-abiding, patience should not be mistaken for weakness.
The party cautioned that continued disregard for due process and accountability could erode public trust in security institutions.
It further called on the Commissioner of Police in the state to demonstrate leadership by addressing the alleged misconduct decisively.
According to the party, restoring confidence in law enforcement requires transparency, discipline, and proper supervision of officers at divisional levels.
Particular concern was raised over allegations of extortion, especially targeting young people and small business owners.
The party insisted that the well-known inscription “bail is free” must reflect actual practice at police stations, rather than serving as a symbolic statement displayed on walls.
Oyo AAC also urged Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to strengthen internal monitoring mechanisms and ensure officers under their command adhere strictly to professional standards.
Proper training, respect for human dignity, and adherence to established procedures were highlighted as critical components of reform.
In referencing past controversies surrounding special tactical units, the party warned against the emergence of facilities or operations that could mirror previously condemned practices.
It stressed that Oyo State must not become a hotspot for unchecked police excesses.
Furthermore, the statement encouraged victims of alleged police brutality or unlawful detention to document incidents and report them through appropriate channels.
The party reaffirmed its willingness to support efforts aimed at securing justice for affected individuals through lawful and peaceful means.
Security analysts note that rebuilding trust between communities and law enforcement agencies remains a national challenge.
Calls for police reform have persisted since 2020, with civil society groups emphasizing accountability, improved welfare for officers, and independent complaint mechanisms.
Oyo AAC concluded by reaffirming its solidarity with residents and civil society organizations advocating for justice and accountability.
It stressed that safeguarding citizens’ rights is not optional but fundamental to democratic governance.
