Nigeria gathers to honour Sheikh Dahiru as thousands, top leaders and dignitaries attend his deeply emotional funeral rites in Bauchi.
Nigeria witnessed a profound moment of national reflection on Friday as thousands of mourners gathered in Bauchi to honour the late Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru.

His passing drew an extraordinary wave of sympathy across northern Nigeria and beyond, prompting the arrival of top government officials, traditional leaders, and followers who travelled great distances to participate in the funeral rites of a man widely regarded as a pillar of religious scholarship.
Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport to represent President Bola Tinubu at the solemn event.
His presence highlighted the magnitude of Sheikh Dahiru’s influence, which transcended regional lines and touched diverse segments of society.
The Vice President was accompanied by key federal officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Information Idris Mohammed, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Ali Pate, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar.
Their attendance underscored the high regard in which the revered scholar was held.
The news of Sheikh Dahiru’s death, which occurred on Thursday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), spread rapidly across the state.
By early morning, crowds had already begun gathering around major roads, mosques, and the funeral venue.
Followers and students travelled from neighbouring states, demonstrating the deep emotional connection many shared with the late scholar.
As a teacher, spiritual guide, and defender of Islamic moral values, he had impacted tens of thousands over several decades.
Given the large influx of mourners, security agencies intensified patrols across the metropolis.
Police personnel, road marshals, and local vigilante groups were stationed at strategic locations to maintain order and ease the traffic gridlock caused by the massive turnout.
The Bauchi State Government also declared Friday a work-free day to allow residents to fully participate in the funeral and pay their final respects to Sheikh Dahiru, whose influence extended across generations.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Maulud Dahiru Bauchi revealed that the funeral prayer would hold at 3:00 p.m., in strict compliance with the written will left by the late scholar.
He further explained that the prayer would be led by Sheikh Sharif Saleh, the Grand Imam of Nigeria, a figure highly respected by Sheikh Dahiru during his lifetime.
The detail reinforced the scholar’s discipline, organisation, and commitment to spiritual order even in matters concerning his final rites.
The funeral ground swelled as dignitaries, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, state governors, emirs, clerics, businessmen, and political leaders, joined ordinary citizens to bid farewell to the respected spiritual icon.
The atmosphere was deeply emotional; some mourners recited Qur’anic verses quietly, while others openly expressed their grief.
For many, the death of Sheikh Dahiru marked the end of an era—one in which he served as a moral compass and a compassionate teacher who shaped countless lives.
Throughout his decades of public service and religious teaching, Sheikh Dahiru was known for promoting peace, tolerance, and unity within the Muslim community.
His guidance reached thousands of households through his sermons, Qur’anic lessons, mentorship programmes, and spiritual interventions.
His passing leaves behind a vast spiritual community that will continue to uphold his values and teachings.
