The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has seized over 350 vehicles with unauthorised number plates across Nigeria within a month. This nationwide operation, which began on February 3, targets vehicles with fake registration numbers and illegal use of number plates by private, commercial, government, and diplomatic vehicles.

According to Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide, the operation aims to enhance road safety and national security. “The proliferation of fake number plates poses significant security risks, undermining law enforcement efforts and compromising national security,” he emphasized.

Key Finding:

350 vehicles impounded: The FRSC has seized over 350 vehicles with unauthorised number plates within a month.

– Nationwide operation: The operation, which began on February 3, targets vehicles with fake registration numbers and illegal use of number plates across Nigeria.

– Security risks: The proliferation of fake number plates poses significant security risks, undermining law enforcement efforts and compromising national security.

Ogungbemide reiterated the FRSC’s commitment to ensuring that all vehicles on Nigerian roads operate with legitimate number plates. He urged the public to cooperate with FRSC personnel and report any suspicious number plates to the nearest FRSC office.

Vehicle owners can acquire legal number plates through the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS), which provides a secure and reliable means of identifying vehicles. Ogungbemide cautioned against the use of “fancy number plates” without proper authorisation, warning that such actions would attract sanctions

The use of unauthorised number plates can have severe consequences, including:

– *Security risks*: Fake number plates can be used to facilitate crime, such as kidnapping, robbery, and terrorism.

– *Traffic accidents*: Unauthorised number plates can make it difficult to identify vehicles involved in accidents, leading to delayed response times and compromised investigations.

– *Revenue loss*: The use of fake number plates can result in lost revenue for the government, as vehicle owners avoid paying registration fees.

The FRSC has called on the public to cooperate with its personnel and report any suspicious number plates to the nearest FRSC office. By working together, the FRSC aims to create a safer and more secure environment for all road users in Nigeria.

By prioritizing road safety and national security, the FRSC aims to reduce the number of accidents on Nigerian roads and prevent the use of fake number plates for criminal activities.
