PDP loses founding figure as APC gains ground in Akwa Ibom

Defection of a PDP founding figure in Akwa Ibom signals a political shift as pressure, loyalty, and strategy reshape alliances ahead of Nigeria’s next elections.

The political landscape of Akwa Ibom State is undergoing a significant transformation as preparations intensify for next year’s general elections.

Long regarded as a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the state has now witnessed a high-profile realignment that could alter long-standing political calculations.

 Emmanuel Enoidem

The Defection of Mr. Emmanuel Enoidem, a former national legal adviser of the PDP and one of its foundational members, has sent ripples across party lines and renewed debate about loyalty, influence, and power in the state.

Enoidem’s political journey is closely intertwined with the history of the PDP itself.

Since the return of democratic governance in 1999, he has remained deeply rooted in the party’s structure at both state and national levels.

His decision to leave, therefore, is not merely symbolic but represents a turning point that reflects wider internal pressures and changing political realities within Akwa Ibom.

Speaking during a late-night meeting with political stakeholders at the Uyo residence of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Enoidem offered a candid explanation for his decision.

According to him, his resolve to remain in the PDP weakened after sustained personal appeals from Governor Umo Eno.

The meeting, which lasted into the early hours of Friday, served as both a moment of reflection and a bridge toward a new political chapter.

Enoidem revealed that the governor’s approach was not confrontational or transactional but deeply emotional.

He recalled receiving a text message that unsettled him profoundly.

The message, he said, left him restless for days and forced him to reflect on years of shared political struggle and friendship.

This emotional engagement, rather than political bargaining, became the catalyst for his eventual Defection.

He narrated how Governor Eno repeatedly expressed a sense of political and personal incompleteness without his support.

Whether at public functions, private gatherings, or even church services, the governor reportedly maintained the same appeal.

This consistency, Enoidem said, weighed heavily on his conscience and made neutrality increasingly difficult.

The pressure reached a climax in early January when the governor sent another message that kept him awake for three consecutive nights.

Unsure of what decision to take, Enoidem requested time for prayer and reflection.

However, before that period elapsed, the governor arrived at his home accompanied by respected political figures from across the state—leaders with whom Enoidem had previously worked.

Faced with collective persuasion and appeals rooted in shared history, he admitted that refusal became impossible, paving the way for the present Defection.

Beyond the emotional narrative, the political implications of his move are far-reaching.

At the stakeholders’ meeting, Enoidem expressed satisfaction at reconnecting with Senate President Akpabio, under whom he served as commissioner in different ministries between 2007 and 2015.

That reunion highlighted how political alliances, once fractured, can realign when circumstances and interests converge.

The formal defection ceremony later took place in Utu Etim Ekpo, the headquarters of his local government area.

The event drew a large crowd of party leaders, elders, and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Umo Eno, accompanied by Senate President Akpabio and members of the State Executive Council, described the occasion as a moment of unity and renewed purpose rather than triumphalism.

Addressing supporters, APC leaders framed the Defection as evidence of growing confidence in the party’s leadership at both state and national levels.

They assured party faithful that the development strengthens their strategy ahead of the elections and positions them for coordinated victories.

Emphasis was placed on grassroots mobilisation, voter engagement, and sustaining internal harmony.

The leaders also projected optimism about securing second-term mandates for President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Akpabio, and Governor Eno.

Supporters were urged to take ownership of the political process by actively promoting the party’s agenda and countering voter apathy.

Analysts believe the Defection underscores a broader pattern of political recalibration in Akwa Ibom, where long-standing loyalties are being reassessed in light of emerging power dynamics.

While the PDP retains a strong presence, the loss of a founding figure could influence perceptions, especially among undecided voters and party loyalists at the grassroots.

As the election season approaches, this development serves as a reminder that Nigerian politics remains fluid, driven as much by personal relationships and emotional bonds as by ideology.

Whether this shift will translate into electoral success remains to be seen, but the Defection has undeniably altered the political conversation in Akwa Ibom State.
