Oyo PDP Chairman Seun Adelore Resigns

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Hon. Seun Adelore, has officially resigned from the ruling party, citing fundamental breaches of democratic ideals and a breakdown of internal party cohesion.

Adelore, who was once regarded as a strong ally of Governor Seyi Makinde, announced his resignation through a formal letter dated July 7, 2025.

In the letter, he expressed profound dissatisfaction with what he described as entrenched injustice, a consistent failure to reward loyalty, and a steady drift away from democratic norms within the PDP in Oyo State.

In his resignation, Adelore did not mince words in detailing the reasons for his exit. He accused the current leadership of the party of operating with increasing authoritarianism and likened the party’s affairs to being run like a private business by a few individuals.

According to him, the democratic principles on which the PDP was founded are now being eroded by personal interests and a growing culture of impunity.

Between 2018 and 2022, Adelore held dual influential roles—Chairman of the PDP in Ibadan North Local Government, widely regarded as the largest in Oyo State, and Chairman of Chairmen across the 33 local government areas of the state.

He played a critical role in Governor Makinde’s rise to power in 2019, mobilizing support and aligning grassroots structures that contributed to the party’s electoral victory. Despite this, he now feels alienated and disrespected within the system he helped build.

According to him, recent developments within the party indicate a betrayal of the collective ideals that once defined the PDP in Oyo. He described the present atmosphere as one marred by vindictiveness, high-handedness, and a troubling disregard for human dignity.

He also expressed concerns about growing intolerance, imposition of candidates, and what he termed the weaponization of party loyalty to silence dissent.

Adelore emphasized that his decision was not made impulsively. Rather, it followed months of thoughtful deliberation and extensive consultations with political associates and supporters across the state.

He added that his resignation was necessary to protect his personal integrity and to remain true to the democratic values he cherishes.

He further issued a stern warning to political actors who may be tempted to intimidate or threaten him as a result of his decision. He vowed to resist any such attempts firmly and decisively.

A portion of his resignation letter reads, “I write to formally tender my resignation as the Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ibadan North Local Government, effective 7 July 2025. I also hereby withdraw my membership of the party.

This decision was not made lightly. After deep personal reflection and wide consultation with my supporters, I have chosen to step aside in order to preserve my integrity and honour.

Despite my significant contributions to the party since 2018—alongside other loyal members—which contributed to the success of the current administration, I have watched with deep concern as values have deteriorated within the party.

Vindictiveness, authoritarian tendencies, and a lack of respect for human dignity have unfortunately become pervasive. As Niccolò Machiavelli observed, despots often mask cruelty with gestures of charity, while trampling those who helped bring them to power. This pattern has become evident in Oyo State, where loyalty is often punished rather than appreciated.

Over the past two years, I have witnessed a growing trend of imposition, intimidation, and disregard for democratic processes—practices that conflict with the foundational principles of the PDP. I can no longer lend my name and reputation to such contradictions.

I am deeply grateful to my supporters, whose unwavering belief in my leadership has been humbling. It has been an honour to serve the party and contribute meaningfully to the progress of Oyo State.

I remain firmly committed to the ideals of true democracy and the genuine development of our state—not superficial accomplishments promoted by surrogates.”

As of the time of this report, the state chapter of the PDP has not issued an official response to Adelore’s resignation.

However, political observers believe his exit could have significant implications, especially within Ibadan North and the larger PDP structure in the state.
