Nigerian Students Threaten Protest Over Telecom Tariff Hike

The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government of Nigeria, calling for the reversal of the recent hike in telecommunication tariffs.

The Nigerian students’ union, which represents university students across the country, has threatened to mobilize its members for a nationwide protest if the government fails to address their demands.

The recent hike in telecommunication tariffs has been met with widespread criticism from various stakeholders, including students, labour unions, and activists. The increase, which took effect on March 1, 2025, has seen the cost of data and voice calls skyrocket, making it difficult for many Nigerians, including students, to afford.

The tariff hike has had a significant impact on education in Nigeria. With many universities adopting online learning platforms, students rely heavily on affordable internet access to attend virtual lectures, conduct research, submit assignments, and participate in online discussions. The increased cost of data has disrupted these critical academic engagements, putting students at a disadvantage.

The NAUS has called on the Federal Government to reverse the tariff hike, citing its negative impact on education. The students’ union has also demanded action on other pressing issues, including:

– Rising insecurity on campuses: Students want the government to ensure their safety and security while on campus.
– Epileptic power supply: NAUS is calling for a reliable and stable power supply to support their academic pursuits.
– Incessant strikes: The students want the government to address the root causes of frequent strikes by university staff, which disrupt their academic calendar.

The NAUS has given the Federal Government 48 hours to reverse the tariff hike and address their demands. Failure to comply will result in a nationwide protest, which will see students from across the country take to the streets to demand action.

The NAUS has received support from labour unions and activists, who have also condemned the tariff hike. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if the government fails to reverse the hike. Activists have also taken to social media to express their solidarity with the students and to call for action.

The NAUS has made it clear that it will not stand idly by while the government imposes policies that harm students and the education sector. The students’ union has called for action, and it is now up to the Federal Government to respond. Will the government reverse the tariff hike and address the demands of the NAUS, or will the students be forced to take to the streets in protest?
