Lagbaja International Hall of Fame Induction: USAWC honours late Army Chief

The United States Army War College honours late Nigerian Army Chief, Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja, with a prestigious Lagbaja International Hall of Fame Induction.

The Lagbaja International Hall of Fame Induction has brought global recognition to the late 23rd Chief of Army Staff of the Nigerian Army, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who has been posthumously honoured by the United States Army War College (USAWC).

The induction marks one of the institution’s most prestigious international distinctions, celebrating the legacy of distinguished alumni who have reached the pinnacle of military leadership in their respective countries.

In a statement released by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, the USAWC officially inducted the late Nigerian Army Chief during the opening ceremony of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Convention held on Monday, October 13, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Centre, Washington, D.C.

According to the statement, the Lagbaja International Hall of Fame Induction symbolises the USAWC’s deep admiration for the late General’s unwavering leadership, dedication to professionalism, and contributions to peace and security both in Nigeria and internationally.

The honour reflects his enduring impact on global military excellence and the advancement of strategic defence cooperation among nations.

The ceremony, described as both solemn and colourful, was presided over by the Commandant of the USAWC, Major General Trevor J. Bredenkamp.

He presented the posthumous award in tribute to General Lagbaja’s visionary leadership and exceptional contributions to the development of modern military practice.

Major General Bredenkamp praised Lagbaja as a man of integrity and courage who inspired trust and respect within the ranks of the Nigerian Army and beyond.

Bredenkamp added that the USAWC was proud to count General Lagbaja among its distinguished alumni, noting that his career exemplified the core values of the institution—discipline, strategic foresight, and a commitment to fostering international peace.

“The late General Lagbaja embodied the essence of leadership and partnership that this Hall of Fame represents,” he said.

Representing the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, at the event was Major General Adeleke Ayannuga, who accepted the honour on behalf of the Nigerian Army.

He was accompanied by Mrs. Maria Abiodun Lagbaja, widow of the late army chief, who received the posthumous award in her husband’s memory.

Lieutenant General Oluyede, in his message delivered at the event, expressed immense pride in the honour accorded to one of Nigeria’s finest officers.

He noted that the Lagbaja International Hall of Fame Induction immortalises the late General’s contributions to national defence and global peacekeeping.

“This recognition reaffirms the Nigerian Army’s steadfast commitment to professionalism, discipline, and international cooperation,” he said.

The Nigerian Army Chief further described the late Lagbaja as a symbol of courage, humility, and patriotism.

Throughout his military career, he demonstrated exceptional command ability and a deep concern for the welfare of his troops.

His leadership style—focused on reform, modernization, and troop morale—made him one of the most respected commanders in the history of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

General Lagbaja’s strategic insight and operational brilliance were evident in his management of counter-insurgency operations in Nigeria’s Northeast and his efforts to improve civil-military relations across the country.

He was also deeply committed to building partnerships with allied forces, ensuring that Nigeria’s role in regional and global peacekeeping missions remained robust and respected.

The Lagbaja International Hall of Fame Induction serves as a lasting reminder of his contributions to strengthening international military cooperation and promoting peace across Africa.

Under his leadership, the Nigerian Army pursued initiatives that improved logistics, training, and technology, setting a new standard for military efficiency and professionalism.

Beyond his achievements in uniform, the late General Lagbaja was admired for his character, humility, and moral conviction. Colleagues and subordinates described him as a leader who inspired through action, upheld discipline, and treated all officers with fairness and respect.

His passing left a deep void not only in the Nigerian Army but also among global military partners who regarded him as a bridge-builder and reformer.

The United States Army War College International Hall of Fame has, since its inception, celebrated alumni who attained the highest military ranks in their home countries and made significant contributions to global security.

Inductees are chosen based on their demonstrated leadership, professional excellence, and commitment to fostering peace through collaboration.

By joining the ranks of the USAWC Hall of Fame, General Lagbaja’s name now stands beside those of the world’s most accomplished military leaders.

His posthumous induction is not only a recognition of his personal excellence but also a testament to the growing stature of the Nigerian Army on the global stage.

The honour further strengthens the bond between the United States and Nigeria in military education, training, and global peacekeeping efforts.

It underscores the shared values of both nations in the pursuit of stability, democracy, and international cooperation.

The Lagbaja International Hall of Fame Induction is, therefore, more than a personal tribute—it is a symbol of Nigeria’s enduring contribution to global peace and security.

It immortalises a man whose legacy continues to inspire leadership, discipline, and service to humanity.

Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja will forever be remembered as a soldier of honour, a reformer, and a patriot whose dedication to the cause of peace transcended borders.

Through this recognition, his vision for a professional, disciplined, and globally respected Nigerian Army continues to live on.
