Federal Polytechnic, Offa, unveils the indigenous OKIN EV1, an eco-friendly electric vehicle with solar features, 125 km range, and modern tech for everyday Nigerians.
Federal Polytechnic Offa has marked a historic milestone in Nigeria’s automotive and technological landscape with the unveiling of its indigenous electric vehicle, the OKIN EV1.
This achievement underscores a bold step toward sustainable mobility while highlighting the ingenuity and capability of home-grown research and engineering.
According to the institution’s spokesperson, Olayinka Iroye, quoting Dr. Olufemi Kehinde, Director of the Polytechnic’s Directorate of Assembly, Fabrication, and Commercialisation of Research Products, “This is proof that Nigeria has the capacity to lead in innovative solutions to global challenges.”
Far more than just a vehicle, the OKIN EV1 represents a fusion of knowledge, creativity, and practical engineering.
“The polytechnic has announced plans to refine the prototype and explore avenues for mass production, aiming to place affordable, eco-friendly vehicles in the hands of everyday Nigerians,” Iroye added.
The electric vehicle is fully powered by electricity and incorporates a solar-energy feature, enabling it to cover an impressive 125 kilometres on a single charge—roughly the distance from Offa to Ilorin.
Its modern design includes a touchscreen display for real-time monitoring, a reverse camera for enhanced safety, and a solar-powered extension system to prolong driving hours.
These features position the OKIN EV1 as a practical, eco-friendly solution for both urban and rural mobility needs.
The development journey of the OKIN EV1 began in 2024 and was completed in less than six months.
Despite challenges in sourcing materials locally, the determination and expertise of the development team produced what many are calling a game changer for Nigeria’s transport industry.
Dr. Kehinde emphasized that this groundbreaking accomplishment would not have been possible without the vision and support of the Rector, Dr. Kamoru Kadiri, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE).
His commitment to fostering an enabling environment for research and innovation has inspired the institution’s scholars and inventors to reach this remarkable milestone.
With the unveiling of the OKIN EV1, Federal Polytechnic, Offa has set the stage for a future where locally-made technologies can compete on a global scale.
