Equatorial Guinea LNG Production Gains Momentum
Equatorial Guinea LNG production is set to expand following the signing of a landmark Incentives Agreement with global energy major Chevron for the development of the Aseng Gas Project in Block I.
The agreement, finalized between the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mining Development, the Ministry of Finance, and Chevron, represents a decisive step in the country’s strategy to consolidate its position as a leading natural gas hub in Africa.
Valued at approximately $690 million, the Aseng Gas Project will unlock new volumes of natural gas to power domestic electricity generation and provide feedstock for the Equatorial Guinea Liquefied Natural Gas (EGLNG) facility.
This ensures a reliable supply of resources for the country’s flagship Punta Europa Gas Complex, one of Central Africa’s most important industrial assets.
Strengthening the Gas Mega Hub Initiative
The new agreement goes beyond a single investment—it directly supports the government’s Gas Mega Hub (GMH) initiative, a bold strategy designed to aggregate underutilized or stranded gas resources for processing at Punta Europa.
The Aseng Gas Project represents the third phase of this initiative and will provide fresh momentum by ensuring stable feedstock for midstream infrastructure.
Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mining Development, Antonio Oburu Ondo, emphasized that the Aseng project will serve both domestic and international needs.
“The Aseng Gas Project will provide a reliable supply of LNG to global markets while strengthening national and regional energy security.
It will support clean cooking initiatives, generate economic growth, and serve as a catalyst for the broader development of our Punta Europa complex,” he said.
Chevron’s Strategic Role in Equatorial Guinea LNG Production
The deal marks Chevron’s growing footprint in the region, with the company consolidating its role as a trusted partner in Equatorial Guinea LNG production.
By aligning its expertise and capital with the government’s long-term vision, Chevron is contributing not only to gas exports but also to energy security and industrial development across the country.
This partnership builds on recent milestones, including the first liquefied natural gas cargo exported by ConocoPhillips from Punta Europa in June 2025.
Together, these projects underline Equatorial Guinea’s potential to become a major player in the global LNG market.
Policy Reforms to Support LNG Growth
In parallel with the Aseng development, Equatorial Guinea is modernizing its regulatory landscape to attract further investment.
Revisions to the Hydrocarbons Law, Tax Law, Labor Law, and Special Economic Zones framework are underway.
These reforms are intended to create a transparent, investor-friendly environment and reinforce the country’s credibility as a reliable energy partner.
With preparations for a 2026 licensing round already in motion, the government is showcasing a pipeline of promising assets that will complement ongoing projects like Aseng and support future production growth.
A Model for Africa’s Energy Future
Equatorial Guinea LNG production is now seen as a model for how African nations can monetize natural resources sustainably while attracting long-term investment.

The Gas Mega Hub exemplifies regional cooperation, with the country leveraging its existing infrastructure to process resources not only from domestic fields but also from neighboring countries.
The African Energy Chamber (AEC) has endorsed the Aseng Gas Project, stating that it will “secure new gas supply, strengthen the Punta Europa complex, and accelerate the success of the Gas Mega Hub.”
By combining strategic partnerships, progressive reforms, and visionary infrastructure, Equatorial Guinea is proving that LNG development can be both profitable and sustainable.
The Aseng Gas Project highlights the country’s determination to transform its natural gas wealth into lasting prosperity, ensuring that LNG remains central to its economic future.
