Woman Ordered To Stop Using Ex-Husband’s Name 11 Years After

A customary court in Rivers State has ruled that Mrs. Kate Ngbor can no longer use her ex-husband’s name, 11 years after their divorce. Chief Sam Ngbor, the claimant, had filed a suit (OCC/9/2021) seeking a court order to stop his ex-wife from bearing his name.

The court granted the order after hearing submissions from both the claimant’s counsel, E. O Erhirhi Esq, and the defendant’s counsel, R.U Egwenre Esq. The judgment stated that Mrs. Ngbor has no right to continue using the name “Ngbor” or “Sam-Ngbor” without the claimant’s express permission.

“The court ordered the defendant to revert to her maiden name or any other name of her choice, excepting ‘Ngbor’ or ‘Sam-Ngbor’ as the case may be,” the judgment read. Additionally, the court restrained Mrs. Ngbor from further using the name Mrs. Kate Ngbor or Mrs. Kate Sam-Ngbor, or presenting herself with that name in any way.
