Arsenal player ratings vs Sunderland: Viktor Gyokeres’ brace boosts Gunners at top

Arsenal delivered a commanding 3-0 Premier League victory over Sunderland, with Viktor Gyokeres scoring twice to extend their lead to nine points at the summit.

The Sweden striker came off the bench and made an instant impact, ensuring Mikel Arteta’s side maintained pressure on Manchester City. Early resistance from Sunderland was broken by Martin Zubimendi’s opener, with Gyokeres sealing the win in the closing stages.

The Emirates Stadium crowd witnessed a disciplined performance from Arsenal’s defence, with goalkeeper David Raya producing key saves despite an early error. “I felt the team was compact and concentrated, especially at the back,” Arteta said.

Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Magalhaes provided solidity, while Riccardo Calafiori returned to the side, contributing defensively though less so offensively.

Martin Zubimendi’s goal from the edge of the box highlighted Arsenal’s attacking precision. The midfielder’s composure and timing were crucial, and his sixth goal of the season came after Leandro Trossard threaded an incisive pass through Sunderland’s defence. “It was a perfect pass; I just had to finish it,” Zubimendi said after the match.

Declan Rice continued his strong midfield form, controlling possession and linking defence to attack effectively. His long-range effort narrowly missed the goal early on, showing his capacity to influence matches. Kai Havertz was also influential, assisting Gyokeres’ first goal with a precise pass and nearly scoring himself from distance before halftime.

Viktor Gyokeres’ entrance changed the game entirely. His first goal came midway through the second half after Havertz delivered a pinpoint assist.

Gyokeres then sealed the victory in stoppage time, finishing from close range after a brilliant setup from Gabriel Martinelli.

The striker now has six goals in eight appearances this season, highlighting his growing importance to Arteta’s attack.

Leandro Trossard was Arsenal’s standout attacker, providing the assist for Zubimendi and helping create space for Gyokeres. “We knew Sunderland would defend deep, so quick passing and movement were key,” Trossard explained.

Noni Madueke contributed occasional sparks but struggled to break through a compact Sunderland defence. Gabriel Jesus started the game but was largely contained, finishing without a goal.

Arsenal’s defence was disciplined throughout, allowing few clear chances. David Raya’s handling and distribution improved after an early mistake, while Timber restricted Sunderland’s attacks down the right flank.

Gabriel Magalhaes won aerial battles consistently, and Calafiori provided backup on the left. The defensive unit’s performance gave confidence for the team to push forward in attack.

Sunderland’s resistance lasted only until Zubimendi opened the scoring. Their defensive organisation initially frustrated Arsenal, but incisive passing and Gyokeres’ finishing proved decisive.

The visitors created limited opportunities, and Raya’s saves ensured Arsenal retained a clean sheet. Arteta praised his players for maintaining focus against a challenging opponent.

The match highlighted Arsenal’s depth and tactical flexibility. Bringing on Gyokeres transformed the attack, showing the bench’s quality. Arteta noted, “Having players who can change the game is essential for a title run.”

Sunderland struggled to cope with Arsenal’s pace and movement, particularly in the final 20 minutes, where the Gunners dominated possession.

Gyokeres’ performance emphasizes his role as a super-sub in the Premier League. His quickfire brace reinforced Arsenal’s title credentials, and his chemistry with Havertz and Martinelli was evident. Fans celebrated his contributions, and pundits praised his composure and finishing in critical moments of the match.

The Gunners now sit nine points clear at the top, with Manchester City due to face Liverpool next. Arsenal’s combination of experienced defenders and dynamic attackers has proved effective, with Arteta blending tactical discipline with fluid attacking play. Sunderland will return to training with lessons learned, particularly about handling substitutions and swift counterattacks.

In conclusion, Arsenal’s 3-0 victory showcased their strength across all positions. Gyokeres’ impact was decisive, Zubimendi and Trossard impressed, and the defence held firm.

The win keeps momentum high for Arteta’s side, who now look primed to challenge for the Premier League title with confidence and depth in every department.
