The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) headquarters was sealed off by police on Saturday, amidst the ongoing local government elections across the state. OSSIEC Chairman, Hashim Abioye, expressed surprise at the police’s actions, stating, “I leave the police IGP in the hands of God”.
Abioye revealed that despite the elections proceeding in all polling units, there was no noticeable police presence. This development comes after the Nigeria Police advised the Osun State Government against holding the election, citing security risks and potential legal implications.
Meanwhile, Governor Ademola Adeleke cast his vote at a polling station in Ede and urged residents to remain calm and peaceful throughout the exercise. The police’s actions have raised concerns about the potential for unrest, but the governor’s participation in the election and call for peace may help to mitigate tensions.
