The residents of Iree, Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State, are fed up with the irregular power supply from the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and have asked the company to disconnect the town if it cannot provide a stable power supply.

For over a year, the town has been battling with erratic electricity supply, while IBEDC continues to issue arbitrary estimated bills. Residents, including real estate developer Prince Ali Afolabi, have accused IBEDC of exploiting them, alleging that many who applied for prepaid meters are yet to receive them.

Afolabi claims that IBEDC is cheating residents with black meters, enabling estimated billing that often results in exorbitant charges. He called for the intervention of the state government, urging IBEDC to disconnect the town from its feeder to save residents from “paying for darkness” if it cannot improve the power supply.

Another resident, Muyiwa Aina, expressed dissatisfaction with the poor power supply and estimated billing, stating that only a few residents have prepaid meters, while many others who applied for them have yet to receive any.

In response, IBEDC appealed to residents’ understanding, explaining that the company is experiencing technical and supply challenges. The Senior Communication Officer for IBEDC’s Osun Region, Kikelomo Owoeye, stated that the company is working diligently to ensure equitable and efficient distribution of power.

This is not the first time IBEDC has faced criticism for its power supply. Other communities, such as Magboro and Ibadan, have also expressed dissatisfaction with the company’s services.

The residents of Iree are demanding improved power supply and fair billing practices from IBEDC. If their demands are not met, they may be forced to explore alternative sources of power.
