Nigeria Customs Service, Western Marine Command, has intercepted 53 sacks of cannabis sativa weighing 1,958kg with a duty-paid value of N398m in Lagos.

The seizure was made at Ilase Sea Beach, about 200 nautical miles from the Lagos Anchorage, after smugglers abandoned their boat and jumped into the sea.

According to Customs Area Controller, Paul Bamisaiye, the interception was the highest single operational seizure of cannabis sativa under his administration.

The command had previously seized 15 sacks of cannabis sativa worth N107m two months ago.

Bamisaiye appreciated the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for supporting the fight against smuggling operations.

The seized cannabis sativa will be handed over to the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and the command will continue to partner with other agencies to protect the nation’s borders.
