Former Military President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida has apologized to Nigerians for the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, describing it as “regrettable” and a “mistake.”
Babangida made the apology during the launch of his memoir, “A Journey in Service,” in Abuja on Thursday. He acknowledged that his administration’s actions disrupted Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule, but emphasized that the country ultimately overcame the setback.
“We acted in the supreme national interest, so Nigeria could survive,” Babangida said. “Our nation’s march to democracy was interrupted, a fact that I deeply regret, but Nigeria survived, and democracy is still alive.
“Babangida assumed full responsibility for the annulment, saying it was a decision taken in the “supreme national interest.” He also acknowledged that the election was “credible, free, and fair” and that the outcome was “undoubtedly” in favor of MKO Abiola.
