Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, has condemned governors for illegally dissolving and taking over the administration of local governments despite the decision of the Supreme Court. He has referred to this action as a treasonable offense.

These remarks were made by Fagbemi on Wednesday, during the opening ceremony of an event that was held in Abuja and was organized by the Nigeria Bar Association.

The Attorney General, who was represented by Tijani Gazali, Director of Civil Appeals in the Ministry of Justice, made the observation that in spite of the decision of the Supreme Court and the provision of the constitution that protects against the interference of state governors in the operation of local government councils, certain governors and their state assemblies continue to dissolve elected local government councils without adhering to the provisions of the constitution.

In addition to this, he asserted that the Attorney General and Commissioners for Justice at the state level do not provide their governors with legal guidance and demanded that a severe punishment be imposed on any governor who continues to engage in such an illegal act.
