Alaafin Owoade’s Coronation to Hold April 5 as Scheduled.
The coronation of Akeem Owoade as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo will proceed as planned on April 5, despite reports suggesting otherwise. Rotimi Osuntola, Chief of Staff to the Alaafin-designate, confirmed that there are no obstacles hindering the coronation ceremony, which will take place at the Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo.

The Oyo State Government had earlier fixed April 5 for the coronation and inaugurated a 25-man committee to ensure the ceremony’s success. Owoade was officially presented with the staff of office and instrument of office by Governor Seyi Makinde on January 13, 2025.
Osuntola addressed concerns surrounding the Apetunmodu of Ipetumodu’s role in the coronation process, stating that historical records do not support the claim that the Apetunmodu’s presence is indispensable. Instead, the receipt of the Sword of Oranyan, traditionally sent from Ile-Ife, is the most sacred element of the Alaafin’s installation.
