Following the reported death of a young man in police custody, angry youths in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area, Ondo State, set a police station on fire.

A town source claims that once the victim was captured, he was tortured to death, which led his coworkers to break into the police station and set it on fire.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and other police officers were reportedly chased away by the irate youngsters before they set the structure on fire.

To show their disapproval of the occurrence, they also staged protests throughout the town.

The young man passed away while undergoing medical treatment at a hospital, according to the Ondo State Police Command, which has denied that he died in their care.

Wilfred Afolabi, the commissioner of police for Ondo State, denounced the assault and arson. In order to determine the circumstances underlying the tragedy and to hold those involved accountable, he ordered a thorough investigation.

The incident started on February 15, 2025, when a disagreement between two families on Ogbomo Street, Ifon, turned into a public altercation, according to Funmi Odunlami, the spokeswoman for the Command.

She disclosed that one of the young men taking part in the altercation, Tobi Bobade, was taken to the station by a man who was identified as Mr. Losilosi.

“Officers from Ifon Division, led by an Inspector, responded promptly, intervened, and made arrests while some suspects fled.

“He appeared weak and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention but was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment.”

His remains have been placed for a post-mortem examination at the Federal Medical Centre in Owo.
