The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its members working in state local government areas to withdraw their services, effective Monday, February 17, 2025. This decision comes amid the ongoing political unrest in the state, which has caused agitation and fear among NLC members working in local government offices and across the state in general.

According to NLC Chairman, Dr. Christopher Arapasopo, the union has observed the escalating tensions and has decided to prioritize the safety of its members. “The NLC is apolitical, but we will not allow our members to work in an atmosphere of insecurity,” Arapasopo stated.

The withdrawal of NLC members is a response to the ongoing face-off between Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, and his predecessor, Adegboyega Oyetola, over the reported reinstatement of local government chairmen and councillors elected in the October 15, 2022 poll.

Adeleke has accused Oyetola of plotting to incite violence in the state, while Oyetola’s camp has denied the allegations.

The NLC has urged all political parties and their supporters to abide by the rule of law to prevent a descent into anarchy. The union has also called on security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property within Osun State local government areas and the state in general.
