In a letter to the Senate, which Senate President Godswill Akpabio read during yesterday’s plenary in Abuja, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun thanked the Senate for looking into the missing firearms, which were allegedly unaccounted for as of December 2020. He also asked the Senate to look into the reported disappearance of 3,907 firearms behind closed doors, for some reasons.
In order to prevent misinformation, safeguard national security interests, and facilitate a more open dialogue and fact-finding process, IGP Egbetokun emphasized that the hearings should be held behind closed doors.
His dedication to upholding a solid alliance with the National Assembly and cooperating to improve security and the lives of Nigerians was reiterated.
It stated, “We appreciate the Senate committee’s probe into the alleged missing firearms and urge that future hearings on sensitive security matters be conducted in camera. This will prevent the creation of a wrong impression in the minds of Nigerians and the international community.”
Senate President Akpabio responded to the letter by confirming that the IGP’s request was clear. He promised that the police would carry out internal investigations and the Senate would carry out external ones in order to guarantee accountability.
