On Thursday, the Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna sentenced a 36-year-old motorist, Mustapha Aminu, to 15 lashes for attacking a police officer on duty.

The defendant was convicted of beating a police officer, Sergeant Adamu Maigari, in the head with a piece of wood.

Inspector Chidi Leo, the prosecution, had previously informed the court that the driver had attacked and hurt a police officer on January 29 at around 2:00 p.m. while the officer was on duty.

Inspector Leo clarified that the driver had been acting carelessly and had hit the officer with a piece of wood after the officer pulled him over. He also said the offence was against Section 237 of the 2017 Kaduna State Penal Code.

The defendant admitted to the charge.

According to Mr. Ibrahim Emmanuel, the magistrate who made the ruling, the punishment was meant to help the convicted person fully comprehend the seriousness of his act.

“This will also serve as a warning to others who may consider committing such crimes.

“I hereby order a court official to administer 15 strokes of the cane,” the Magistrate Ordered.
