Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, denied on Monday that he did not back President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential race, saying he had gone past the accusations.
With the support of the All Progressives Congress, Tinubu defeated the two main opposition candidates, Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, to win the election.
APC leader El-Rufai has been at the center of political debates lately, saying that his opinions on governance would not alter no matter what position he held in the Tinubu-led government.
Yusuf Tukur, an X user, tweeted on Sunday under the handle #realYusufTukur, asserting that Tinubu and his supporters had aggressively courted El-Rufai’s support prior to the election, but subsequently accused him of not supporting the president.
“When they were desperately seeking El-Rufai’s support, #officialABAT and his goons were everywhere singing Malam’s praises. Given their penchant for ingratitude, however, they’ve turned around to claim that Malam didn’t even support PBAT. But these testimonies say otherwise,” the tweet read.
Through his X handle, El-Rufai responded that he had no personal expectations from his political acts and that the events that were taking place were just a reflection of human nature.
“Without expecting anything in return, we did what we did for God, our nation, and our party. What is happening is just another aspect of life and a natural element of being human. We’ve moved on, but they can’t sleep because of their conscience. In any case, thanks,” he wrote.
El-Rufai further clarified his position on governance by comparing some politicians to actors and stating that he does not believe in political pretense.
“To be honest, I have no idea how to act. “Some people are better suited for being a Nollywood actor in government than others,” he said.
