President John Mahama of Ghana has banned all government employees from traveling in first class as part of an attempt to reduce public spending in the face of the nation’s economic challenges.
While the Chief of Staff must first approve any necessary trips, Mahama stated that all non-essential travel would be banned during the swearing-in of new ministers at the Jubilee House.
He disclosed that in an effort to save government spending, he has instructed the Chief of Staff to formally inform all ministers and government representatives about an immediate ban on non-essential travel.
“Any travel that is deemed essential and necessary must be cleared first with the Office of the Chief of Staff, and such travels will have to be taken in modesty, no first class.
He stated, “The resources you will be working with belong to the Ghanaian people who put us in office,” and that they should not be abused for extravagant or luxuries.
