The Bayelsa State Chapter of the Albinism Association of Nigeria (AAN) has warned of a growing health emergency as the number of skin cancer cases among people with albinism in the state has increased.

With the theme “United by Unique,” the association commemorated World Cancer Day in 2025 and joined millions of people around the globe in demanding prompt action to stop additional avoidable deaths.

The daily challenges faced by people with albinism, especially their susceptibility to excessive sunlight exposure, which raises their chance of developing skin cancer, are a major source of concern.

Mrs. Ogbogene Joy, the chairman of the Albinism Association of Nigeria for Bayelsa State, stated, “For many of our members, working under the scorching sun is not a choice but a necessity for survival. Even though they are aware of the dangers, poverty leaves them with no alternatives, making them more vulnerable to skin cancer.”

She advocated for government healthcare programs like the Bayelsa Health Insurance Scheme (BHIS) to address health issues associated to albinism.

She also urged the state government, local government councils, corporate organisations, and international bodies to work together on long-term solutions, such as research and better healthcare services, and to support legislative efforts to create policies that address the health and welfare of people with albinism.
