Man Dies After Market Altercation In Abuja, Suspect Apprehended

After an altercation at the Utako Market in Abuja that resulted in the death of Ifeanyi Chukwu, Onu Simeon was taken into custody by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command.

SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, said in a statement that the event happened at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

She claims that the command sent officers to the location right away after receiving a distress call regarding a dispute at the market.

When they arrived, Chukwu was discovered comatose and taken to the NNPC Hospital in Utako, where a physician pronounced him deceased.

“At approximately 9:30 AM on February 5, 2025, the Command received a distress call regarding a fight in Utako Market,” the statement said.

When police officers arrived on the site, they discovered Ifeanyi Chukwu unconscious on the ground.

Police officers hurried him right away to NNPC Hospital in Utako, where a physician pronounced him dead.

Adeh added that preliminary investigations revealed that the conflict between Simeon, a resident of Anguwan Biggy, Jabi Daki Biyu, and Chukwu of Kuchigoro, Lugbe, started over a disputed space for displaying goods.

She also revealed that Chukwu abruptly passed out amid the physical altercation that broke out between them.

According to preliminary inquiries, Onu Simeon of Anguwan Biggy, Jabi Daki Biyu, and one Ifeanyi Chukwu of Kuchigoro, Lugbe, had previously fought over a location to sell their wares.

Ifeanyi Chukwu abruptly passed out and fainted during the physical altercation that broke out between them. Onu Simeon, the suspect, is presently being held by the police while investigations are ongoing, and his remains have been placed at a general hospital for additional examination. In response to the tragedy, FCT Commissioner of Police CP Olatunji Disu, Adeh continued, advised citizens to adopt peaceful conflict resolution, cautioning that violence frequently has disastrous outcomes.
