On Wednesday, the House of Representatives requested that the federal government classify coastal communities in Ondo state that produce oil as disaster areas that need to be placed under a state of national emergency.

Donald Ojogo introduced a resolution of urgent public interest in which the House discussed the necessity of preventing the extinction of villages due to ocean surges and sea incursions.

Ojogo, the leader of the motion’s debate, claimed that the four oil-producing settlements in Ondo State’s coastline region are significant money generators for the country.

He claims that the communities produce roughly 5.8% of the 60,000 barrels per day (BPD) of crude oil produced in Ondo state, which is equivalent to roughly 3.7% of Nigeria’s total oil production.

According to the Ondo lawmaker, the villages’ oil output helped Ondo State rank fifth among Nigeria’s oil-producing states under the NDDC law.

In terms of portraying unpleasant and ecologically impacted visuals, the Ondo lawmaker claimed that this upsetting scene in the oil-bearing coastal communities is now a metaphor and a regular topic for advertorials on national and international broadcast networks.

Two legislation supported by the members from Ondo, however, passed first reading on the House floor on Wednesday.

In addition to the National Institute for Vocational and Entrepreneurial Studies at Agadagba, Obon-Arogbo, the law aims to build the Federal University of Oil and Gas Technology at Igbakoda.
