The appointment of Prince Johnson Adekanmi Abikoye as the new Asaoni of Ora Igbomina and Prince Adesuyi Haastrup as the new Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesha land is a major milestone for Osun State’s cultural leadership.

Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun, made this news in a statement he issued on Friday outlining the decisions reached at a state Executive Council meeting.

The appointments follow the September 11, 2024, death of Oba (Dr.) Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II, the previous Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesha land.

Prince Haastrup has been chosen as the Owa-elect in accordance with customary procedures and in recognition of this vacancy. With his appointment, the leadership of Ijesha land—a area renowned for its rich cultural heritage and traditions—will continue.

Concurrently, on November 19, 2023, the governor formally acknowledged Prince Abikoye’s elevation to the position of Asaoni of Ora Igbomina.

Governor Adeleke sent both newly appointed monarchs his sincere congratulations during Friday afternoon’s Executive Council meeting.

He underlined that their choices were made in accordance with Chapter 25 of the Chiefs’ Law of Osun State 2002, highlighting the legal framework that governs customary nominations in the area.

The governor called on the people of Ora Igbomina and Ijesha Land to welcome their new leaders with collaboration and unity during his speech.

He emphasised that the foundation of their relationships should be based on the values of peace and togetherness, and he urged the populace to assist their rulers in creating a cooperative atmosphere.

During the meeting, Governor Adeleke used the occasion to praise his Executive Council members in addition to the royal appointments.

Noting that this was the last meeting of 2024, he expressed his gratitude for their commitment and achievements throughout the year.

Although he acknowledged their excellent tenure, he pushed them to go above and beyond their prior accomplishments and stay dedicated to carrying out their duties as Osun State Executive Council members as they enter 2025.

The governor’s desire for ongoing development and efficient government in the upcoming year is reflected in this call to action.
