Police in Pakistan said on Thursday that a father had killed his teenage daughter after she posted what he deemed to be obscene videos on the social media platform TikTok.
Babar Baloch, the local police commander, stated that the man, who is believed to be in his 50s, recently returned to Quetta, a city in South-Western Pakistan, with his family from the United States.
After his daughter refused to wear more modest clothing and to stop posting what the family deemed to be “indecent” videos on TikTok, the now-detained father admitted to shooting her earlier this week, according to Baloch.
The police are investigating the incident as a case of “honor killing.”
According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, around 1,000 women are murdered in Pakistan under the guise of preserving family honor by fathers, brothers, and sons.
According to rights organization Amnesty International, the majority of the time, the killers get away with it because of a contentious Islamic provision in the legislation that permits the victim’s family to forgive the murderer.
The HRCP claims that despite Pakistan’s 2016 approval of a law that partially eliminated the contentious language, the practice has persisted.
