A stampede inside the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday morning is thought to have killed at least ten persons, including children, and injured a number of others.More than 3,000 people, mostly from Mpape, Gishiri Village, and other communities, arrived to receive relief from the church when the horrific occurrence happened.

The distribution has been discontinued indefinitely, according to Padre Mike Nsikak Umoh, National Director of Social Communications at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, who confirmed the occurrence. At least seven of the dead were children, according to an eyewitness who called the situation “harrowing.”

The rush broke out between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM when the crowd surged forward, but several beneficiaries apparently arrived as early as 4:00 AM to grab their part. There have been ten fatalities, including children.

The eyewitness, a mother of five, described it as awful. The majority of people in attendance came from Gishiri Village and Mpape. May the souls of the deceased be given to God. Police, military, and DSS personnel were among the security forces sent in to break up the throng and restore order. After first being overrun by desperate locals, the church grounds were later cleansed under law enforcement’s watch.

This occurrence comes after a comparable catastrophe that occurred earlier this week in Ibadan, Oyo State. At least 35 children were killed in a stampede at a Bashorun children’s funfair, and six more were seriously hurt. When guests hurried to get food and presents, that event—which was hosted at the Islamic High School—also turned chaotic. Discussions concerning crowd management and the necessity of improved coordination during humanitarian situations to stop additional deaths have been rekindled by the back-to-back catastrophes.
