Lagos State political landscape has been thrown into disarray as two individuals lay claim to the position of Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. This unprecedented situation centers around Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached by the assembly earlier this month, and his successor Mojisola Meranda, who has been recognized by a majority of lawmakers.

The crisis began when Obasa was removed from his position following allegations of financial impropriety and misconduct, which he has vehemently denied. His impeachment came after a series of tumultuous sessions within the assembly, where lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction with his leadership style and handling of assembly affairs.

Despite the impeachment, Obasa has continued to assert that he remains the legitimate Speaker, claiming that the process leading to his removal was fraught with irregularities and lacked the necessary legal backing.
In a statement released on social media, and during a welcome event organized in his honor by his supporters from Agege, Alimosho, and Kosofe local government areas
Obasa stated, “I am still the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. The actions taken against me are null and void, and I will continue to perform my duties.
”This assertion has sparked confusion among members of the assembly, with some lawmakers rallying behind Obasa, while others have pledged allegiance to the newly appointed Speaker, who has begun to assume the responsibilities of the office.
The division has led to a chaotic atmosphere within the assembly, with heated debates and disagreements spilling over into public view.
Obasa was allegedly removed from office by his colleagues in the House over allegations of gross misconduct and financial mismanagement.
Addressing his removal, Obasa argued that the process did not follow constitutional procedures. He, however, stated that he would accept his removal if it is carried out in accordance with constitutional guidelines.

Tongues have been wagging with divergent views on the impasse .
An observer claims,“If the assembly followed due process in impeaching Obasa, his claims may not hold water. However, if there were violations of procedural rules, it could complicate the matter further,” said Dr. Ayoade Alabi, a constitutional lawyer based in Lagos.
The Lagos State government has urged all parties involved to resolve the impasse amicably, emphasizing the need for stability and effective governance in the state.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called for unity among lawmakers to ensure that the assembly can function effectively in addressing pressing issues facing the state, including infrastructure, healthcare, and security. As the situation unfolds, political analysts are closely monitoring the developments, warning that prolonged uncertainty could undermine public confidence in the legislative process and the overall governance structure in Lagos State.
