President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently holding a high-level security meeting with Nigeria’s military service chiefs and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) at the State House in Abuja.
The meeting comes amid escalating security crises in parts of northern Nigeria—particularly in Plateau, Benue, and Borno States—where a recent surge in violent attacks has led to the tragic loss of hundreds of lives over the past few weeks.
This development follows the President’s recent directive approving the immediate establishment and deployment of forest guard units across 1,129 forest locations nationwide. The initiative aims to strengthen national security and counter insurgency, banditry, and other criminal activities, particularly in rural and forested regions.
Present at the meeting are key figures in Nigeria’s security architecture, including: Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar; Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Other senior security officials and presidential aides are also in attendance.
While the specifics of the discussions have not yet been disclosed, sources suggest the meeting will focus on strategies to address the resurgence of insecurity across the country, including coordinated inter-agency efforts to stem the violence in the north.
The meeting precedes President Tinubu’s scheduled departure to Rome on Saturday, where he is expected to attend the inauguration mass of Pope Leo XIV, following an official invitation from the Vatican.
