The Kwara State Government has announced the immediate and indefinite closure of Government High School and Government Day Secondary School, both situated in Adeta, Ilorin, following a series of violent disturbances and repeated incidents of student unrest.
The directive, issued by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, comes in response to escalating tension among students, which has resulted in violent clashes, the vandalism of school property, and the continuous disruption of academic activities.
According to Dr. Olohungbebe, the safety of students, teachers, and school personnel remains the top priority of the government.
“This measure has become necessary to prevent further breakdown of law and order within the affected schools. The persistent unrest has created an unsafe environment that is incompatible with effective teaching and learning,” the Commissioner stated.
While the schools will be closed to the general student body, special arrangements have been made for students currently participating in the ongoing Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSSCE). These students will be permitted to enter the premises under strict supervision.
Admittance will be granted only to candidates wearing valid school identification cards, and only examination supervisors and teachers directly involved in the process will be allowed on the school grounds.
The Commissioner also issued a stern warning to parents and guardians, urging them to ensure their wards remain at home for the duration of the closure.
He stressed that any student found violating the government’s directive or attempting to access the school premises without authorization will face disciplinary action and be dealt with by security agencies.
“We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure compliance. Our goal is to restore peace and create a more secure environment before academic activities can resume,” Dr. Olohungbebe added.
The Kwara State Government has not yet announced a date for the reopening of the affected schools. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and conduct a thorough assessment. Further updates will be communicated to the public in due course.
The government remains committed to promoting discipline and maintaining a safe, supportive environment for learning in all schools across the state.
