Former Uruguayan President José “Pepe” Mujica has died at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of humility and progressive politics. Mujica, who served as president from 2010 to 2015, was known for his modest lifestyle and generous spirit. He earned the nickname “world’s poorest president” for giving away a large portion of his salary to charity and living in a modest home on the outskirts of Montevideo.

During his presidency, Mujica refused to move into the luxurious presidential residence, opting instead to stay in his humble home with his wife, Lucía Topolansky. He drove a 1987 Volkswagen Beetle and lived a simple life, far removed from the trappings of power. When asked about his lifestyle, Mujica said, “They say I’m the poorest president. No, I’m not… Poor are those who want more… because they’re in an endless race.”

Mujica’s presidency was marked by significant progressive reforms, including the legalization of abortion, same-sex marriage, and recreational cannabis. His administration also saw a reduction in poverty and unemployment, with the economy growing at an average annual rate of 5.4%. He was praised for his fight against poverty, but criticized for failing to rein in public spending.

As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from across Latin America. Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi said, “Thank you for everything you gave us and for your deep love for your people.” Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva described Mujica as “an example for Latin America and the entire world,” adding that “his human greatness transcended the borders of Uruguay and his presidential mandate.”

Mujica’s life was not without its challenges. He was a former guerrilla fighter and spent 12 years in prison for revolutionary activities, including torture and solitary confinement. Despite this, he remained committed to his ideals and continued to campaign for the left until the end of his life.

In his later years, Mujica was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, which spread to his liver. He passed away on May 13, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. His legacy as a champion of humility and progressive politics will be remembered for generations to come.
