A yet-to-be-identified young woman was rescued from a suicide attempt along the waterside axis of Okpulo Umuobo in Aba, Abia State, on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted a disturbing moment when the woman, believed to be in her early twenties, attempted to jump into the river in what appeared to be a bid to end her life.

The incident unfolded in broad daylight, attracting the attention of pedestrians and commuters who noticed her suspicious behavior near the edge of the river.

Fortunately, the vigilance and swift intervention of concerned passersby prevented what could have been a tragic loss. The Good Samaritans quickly rushed to restrain and pull the woman away from the water, ultimately saving her life.

Following the rescue, the woman was seen lying quietly on a pavement by the riverbank. She appeared disoriented and emotionally distressed but did not offer any explanation for her actions, nor did she speak to those gathered around.

Her silence added a layer of mystery and concern to the incident, leaving onlookers and authorities questioning the possible reasons behind her suicide attempt.

The incident was promptly reported to the nearest police station by Enyimba FM, a local media outlet, according to the spokesperson of the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka.

“Enyimba FM reported to the nearest police station, who assisted in her rescue,” DSP Chinaka confirmed. She noted that police personnel responded swiftly upon receiving the report and helped to secure the woman and ensure her safety.

As of the time of this report, the young woman remains unidentified, and no official statement has been released regarding her current condition or any underlying issues that may have led to the incident. Authorities are expected to carry out further investigations, and efforts are likely underway to provide her with medical and psychological support.

The incident has sparked renewed calls for increased mental health awareness and support systems in communities across Nigeria, with many social commentators urging individuals facing emotional or psychological challenges to seek help rather than resort to self-harm.
