In a significant move aimed at strengthening ties with Cross Riverians abroad, Governor Bassey Edet Otu has officially inaugurated the Cross River State Diaspora Commission. The initiative is designed to engage the diaspora community in state-building efforts, investment partnerships, cultural exchange, and foreign relations.

The inauguration ceremony, held on Tuesday in Calabar, marks a major milestone under Governor Otu’s “People First” agenda. A statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nsa Gill, confirmed the formation of the commission, whose core mandate is to harness the potential of Cross River’s global citizens in advancing the state’s socio-economic development.

Speaking at the event, Governor Otu charged the newly appointed commission members to take up the responsibility with commitment and urgency. “I welcome and congratulate you all. You have an important job to do: manage our people in the diaspora and build the image of Cross River on a global scale. The task is crucial, and I encourage you to give it your best shot,” he said.

According to the governor, the commission is also expected to function as a vital bridge between the state government and its diaspora population, leveraging their expertise, resources, and networks to contribute to the overall development of Cross River.

“This Commission will facilitate strategic partnerships, attract foreign direct investments, and strengthen our global diplomatic relations. It is not just a ceremonial body, but a core part of our economic growth and cultural diplomacy efforts,” Governor Otu added.

Dr. Bong Duke, Vice Chairman and CEO of the State Planning Commission, who played a key role in the commission’s creation, expressed satisfaction with the smooth inauguration process, which followed due legislative screening and approval.

“I feel fulfilled today. We’ve worked hard to bring this vision to life. The caliber of individuals on this commission gives me great confidence that we are on the right track,” Dr. Duke said.

In his remarks, the newly appointed Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Otu Esu Okor, pledged the commitment of the team to deliver on its mandate. “We are grateful to His Excellency for giving us this platform to contribute our quota to the growth of our beloved state. We are already in talks with diaspora partners to attract investments to Cross River. We will not fail,” he affirmed.

Other members of the commission include Elizabeth Greene (Secretary), Mr. Eyobong Ita, Mr. Douglas Agba, Dr. Maggie Inde, Mrs. Emily Madueke, Mrs. Anita Pascal, Mrs. Barbara Eta, and Dr. Ignatius Oli. The diverse team comprises individuals with backgrounds in governance, investment, international relations, and development.

The Cross River State Diaspora Commission is tasked with:

Fostering unity and collaboration among Cross Riverians abroad

Promoting cultural and educational exchange programs

Facilitating diaspora-led investments and developmental initiatives

Acting as a strategic arm of the state’s foreign policy and external partnerships

Since assuming office, Governor Otu has continued to implement institutional reforms targeted at economic revitalization and inclusivity. The Diaspora Commission, officials say, will help unlock new development frontiers by tapping into the expertise and goodwill of the state’s international community.

The commission is expected to commence operations immediately and will be engaging with embassies, diaspora organizations, and international development partners as part of its early activities.

As Cross River sets its sights on sustainable development and global relevance, the inauguration of this commission marks a bold step toward mobilizing its global citizens for collective impact and progress.
