The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to actively collaborate with the National Assembly, the media, and other key stakeholders in the ongoing review of the Cybercrime Act.

Speaking during a meeting with the United States envoy, Mr. David Greene Mills, Minister Idris acknowledged the importance of inclusive engagement in the legislative process. “Regarding the ongoing review of the Cybercrime Act, the Federal Government will ensure meaningful input by working closely with the National Assembly, media organizations, and other critical stakeholders. Our goal is to produce legislation that is broadly acceptable and fit for purpose,” he stated.

Minister Idris emphasized the Tinubu administration’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding freedom of expression and press freedom, which he described as fundamental pillars of Nigeria’s democracy. He highlighted the indispensable role of a free and independent media in the democratic process, reiterating the government’s recognition of the media as a vital partner in governance.

“I shared my views with the Ambassador and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to preserving the space for free expression and journalistic practice. We believe journalism and the media constitute an integral part of democratic governance. No democracy can flourish without a vibrant and independent Fourth Estate,” he said.

The Minister further urged media professionals to uphold the tenets of responsible journalism, balancing press freedom with a strong sense of duty and patriotism.

“We encourage members of the Nigerian media to continue practicing responsible journalism. While they have largely demonstrated responsibility, we urge them to remain committed to truth, accuracy, and national interest. A responsible and patriotic media is essential for a thriving democracy,” he added.

Minister Idris also reiterated the government’s pledge to promote media and information literacy as part of efforts to combat the spread of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.

In his remarks, Ambassador Mills described his discussion with the Minister as constructive, particularly regarding press freedom and the Cybercrime Act review. He welcomed the Minister’s public statement on World Press Freedom Day, which reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s dedication to preserving press freedom.

“I had a very productive private discussion with the Minister concerning press freedom in Nigeria. I appreciate his commitment to ensuring space for expression and a free press, and I welcomed his statement on May 3, marking World Press Freedom Day, where he reiterated the government’s commitment to these values,” Mills said.

He also noted the importance of the Ministry of Information’s involvement in the upcoming legislative reforms. “We discussed the ongoing consideration of reforms to the Cybercrime Act, and I expressed my support for the Ministry of Information to play a central role in that process at the National Assembly,” he added.

This meeting marks the second formal engagement between Ambassador Mills and Minister Idris on matters pertaining to press freedom in Nigeria.
