In a rare political convergence, some of Nigeria’s most prominent statesmen and political figures gathered in Abuja on Monday, May 13, 2025, to honour former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, at the launch of his much-anticipated autobiography, Being True to Myself.

The Lamido’s autobiography high-profile event, held at the NAF Conference Centre, served as a political and intellectual reunion, attracting former Presidents, Vice Presidents, governors, party leaders, and political associates from across the country’s political spectrum.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo led the distinguished guests, arriving alongside former Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar and Namadi Sambo. Also in attendance were former Senate Presidents Ken Nnamani and Pius Anyim, underscoring the weight of national attention the event commanded.

Joining them were several current and former governors, including Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi, and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang. Notable past governors such as Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Ahmed Makarfi (Kaduna), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), and Liyel Imoke (Cross River) were also present.

2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, drew considerable attention at the event, symbolizing a blend of generational leadership and progressive ideology. His presence alongside stalwarts of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emphasized the inclusive, cross-party relevance of Lamido’s political journey.

The occasion was not only about a book; it was a celebration of legacy, ideology, and the enduring relevance of principled leadership. The autobiography Being True to Myself captures Sule Lamido’s decades-long political odyssey—from his days as a youth activist to becoming Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister and later, two-term governor of Jigawa State.

Former PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, who was tapped to review the book, praised Lamido’s resilience, describing the autobiography as “a bold account of conviction, loyalty, and progressive governance.” He noted that Lamido’s story is one that transcends partisanship, rooted in Nigeria’s democratic struggle and socio-political evolution.

In his address, Obasanjo lauded Lamido’s commitment to national unity and grassroots development. “Sule has remained consistent in his beliefs, even when it was not politically convenient. That is a mark of true leadership,” Obasanjo remarked.

Atiku Abubakar, who also spoke, echoed similar sentiments, commending Lamido for “remaining true to the ideals of justice, equity, and service.” He added that Nigeria needs more leaders who value principles over personal gain.

The event also provided an opportunity for sober reflection on the state of the nation. Many of the speakers used the platform to call for renewed commitment to good governance, democratic values, and youth inclusion.

Peter Obi, in his brief remarks, noted that the lessons from Lamido’s political journey should inspire younger Nigerians to engage more constructively in politics. “This is not just a book. It’s a roadmap of courage, sacrifice, and service. It teaches us that public office should be about impact, not power,” he said.

Monday’s gathering was a significant show of political unity at a time when Nigeria faces deepening divisions, economic hardship, and rising public disillusionment. The presence of leaders from different political backgrounds and generations underscored a shared recognition that Nigeria’s future must be built on the values of honesty, unity, and resilience.

As Sule Lamido autographed copies of Being True to Myself, guests departed not only with a book in hand, but with a renewed sense of history and responsibility.
