The federal criminal trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs has commenced with opening statements in a New York City courtroom. Combs has pleaded not guilty to charges including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution.

Prosecution’s Opening Statement
Assistant US Attorney Emily Johnson described Combs’ relationship with Cassie Ventura as “complicated” but emphasized that Combs held power and control. Johnson alleged that Combs coerced Ventura into engaging in sex acts with him and male prostitutes during “Freak Offs,” where women were allegedly drugged and forced to engage in sex for days.

Allegations Against Combs
The prosecution claims Combs used lies, drugs, threats, and violence to force and coerce Ventura and another victim, known as “Jane,” to have sex with him in front of male escorts. Combs allegedly called these encounters “Freak Offs,” “Wild King Nights,” and “Hotel Nights.”

Defense Team
Combs’ defense team, led by attorneys Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos, will argue that Ventura had a propensity for violence toward Combs during their 11-year relationship. They may ask Ventura about violent interactions unrelated to the allegations in this case.

Key Witnesses
Cassie Ventura, Combs’ former girlfriend, is expected to testify as one of the first witnesses. Prosecutors indicated they would call two “quick” witnesses before Ventura, who may take the stand as early as today.

Trial Details
The trial is expected to last approximately eight weeks. Combs faces up to life in prison if convicted on the most serious counts. The jury consists of eight men and four women, with six alternates.

Evidence
A key piece of evidence is a 2016 video showing Combs assaulting Ventura, which will be used to demonstrate Combs’ history of using force. The defense will attempt to argue that the video is part of a “long-term volatile relationship.”

Family Support
Combs’ family, including his mother and children, are present in court to support him.

Charges
Combs is accused of creating a criminal enterprise using his business empire, engaging in sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
