Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, will receive the Torch of Unity tomorrow, Tuesday, May 13, at the Governor’s Office entrance, marking the countdown to the National Sports Festival, “Gateway 2025.”
The announcement was made today by the Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Honourable Wasilat Adegoke.
The Torch, presented by officials of the National Sports Commission on behalf of Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, symbolizes the unity and spirit of the festival, Nigeria’s equivalent of the Olympic Games.
The event, set to commence on May 16 in Ogun State, will see Oyo State field 320 athletes and over 100 officials.
Commissioner Adegoke highlighted the state’s preparations, including plans for immediate monetary rewards for athletes winning gold, silver, or bronze medals. She also praised Governor Makinde for approving an ₦80,000 minimum wage for contract staff of the Oyo State Sports Council, underscoring the government’s commitment to sports development.
The Torch of Unity, currently touring Nigeria, aims to raise public awareness for the upcoming Gateway Games.
