Two graduates of Niger Delta University, Amassoma, were hacked to death by suspected cultists.
A devastating incident has occurred in the Gbarantoru community of Yenagoa Local Government Area in Bayelsa State, where two graduates of the Niger Delta University, Amassoma, were hacked to death by suspected cultists. The victims, one identified as Ayaokpo Sinclair from Tombia community, were brutally attacked around 11 pm on Thursday.
According to Mr. Tolummbofa Jonathan, Commander of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria in Bayelsa State, the incident unfolded when a group of boys arrived in the community in a vehicle, shouting “See them” and chanting “aye, aye,” believed to be their cult slogan. The cultists then attacked the graduates, inflicting machete cuts on them.
Jonathan recounted that one of the victims escaped with machete cuts and jumped into a nearby creek, where he eventually died. The other victim was killed instantly. In a tragic turn of events, the driver of the vehicle that brought the cultists attempted to save one of the victims, who had managed to swim out of the creek, but was overpowered and killed by the attackers.
The police have commenced an investigation into the matter, and some suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing. The driver of the vehicle that brought the hoodlums to the community is among those arrested. The State Criminal Investigation Department is trailing the fleeing suspects.
Jonathan said, “Though the one that jumped into the creek had managed to swim out, but the driver of the vehicle that brought the cultists later accosted him, and identified him as his relation and tried to save him, but when the attackers came back to the car and saw him, they overpowered the driver and cut him until he became unconscious.
“I tried with my men to revive him by taking him to the community health centre for first aid. In the process at the clinic, he also gave up. So, the police were invited, and the bodies were deposited at the morgue.”
The spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr. Musa Mohammed, confirmed the incident, stating that the police are working to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.
“The State Criminal Investigation Department has commenced an investigation into the matter to arrest the fleeing suspects.”
