In a bold move to promote clean sports, the Imo State Government, through its Ministry of Sports, has teamed up with the Ibadan Botanical Doping Research Group from the University of Ibadan to educate athletes on the risks of doping, particularly from indigenous herbs and roots.

The initiative, held at Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, targeted athletes preparing for the National Sports Festival. The workshop introduced athletes to “Optotomous Botanical Supplement Doping,” a term coined by the research group to describe performance-enhancing local herbs that could lead to positive doping tests.

The session underscored the hidden dangers of traditional substances often overlooked by athletes.

Imo State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Obinna Everistus Onyeocha, emphasized the state’s commitment to drug-free sports, citing Governor Hope Uzodimma’s legacy as a former President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation.

“Substance abuse tarnishes careers and our state’s reputation. With proper education, our athletes will compete with integrity,” Onyeocha told reporters.

Hon. Chief Ogbonna Eze, Special Adviser to the Governor on Narcotics, praised the partnership, noting Uzodimma’s pioneering appointment of an SA on Narcotics to combat drug abuse. “This collaboration strengthens our fight against harmful substances,” Eze said.

Dr. Peggy-Joe Olaseyinde, leader of the research group, highlighted the risks of indigenous herbs, which can be synthesized into banned substances. “Athletes may unknowingly consume herbs that trigger doping violations. Our mission is to raise awareness,” she said.
